I had the same reaction when I read this. She was doing the best she could??!! Oh Hell NO! She was more concerned about keeping her ass outta jail than for the welfare of that child. Her low IQ? Even another child or possibly a dog would have taken better care of this girl better than her egg donor.

Happens all the time. But I find it so hard to believe that a social worker visited that home and did nothing.

Dinah, where I live, a single mother with a very messy home was "invited" by Children's Services to put her three kids in foster care "temporarily" so that she could take a break, as she was a pretty stressed out woman. During her break, she was supposed to get her apartment spic 'n span and then they'd bring the kids back. Of course, they didn't give the kids back BUT one of the children, named Marcus Feisel, was three years old and autistic. His foster family killed him and then burned his body and dumped his remains in the Ohio River.
And her house was nothing compared to the condition of Danielle's home.
I contended that it would be a lot cheaper to send someone into her home once a week to clean it and keep the kids together rather than taking the kids out of the home. No one ever alleged that the mother abused the children in any way. It was just the mess.
We have a very strange system, where in one locale kids who are otherwise well-cared for can be removed from a messy home and a child in a home filled with roaches and maggots can be left behind.

Ah, yes, it was those 'liberals' who tried to prevent accurate information about birth control from getting to the children in school who desperately need it. It was those nasty 'liberals' who have the idiotic idea that "abstinence" is something that will work for children under extreme peer pressure and the stresses of burgeoning hormones and reproductive urges, and force the children to go without information that could save their lives and, incidentally, prevent conception; like "USE ConDoms!"
StAnn, it's the fundamentalist religious right faction here in the U.S. that has severely limited and attempted to completely eradicate open, free access to accurate birth control information and methods for teenagers and even young children. They have aggressively schemed to cut off funding for Third-World birth control programs. They are attempting to completely eradicate not only abortion (which I don't like but will not forbid others from this technique), but many other forms of birth control as well, especiallycutting fundingfor lower-income women! As a result of elimination of the Third-World birth control programs, now these countries are overwhelmed with people, ones they haven't the resources to fully care for.
In addition, these same countries, due to the desperation of their citizens, have been instrumental in taking away American jobs. The fabric industry that used to be well-established in the American South, now is largely located overseas. The shoe-making industries are now in Brazil, Sri Lanka, India, and China. China has commendably tried to limit its population growth, but have run smack up against the antiquated attitudes and traditions of the male-dominated aspects of ancient Chinese culture. Need I state the obvious - there is a strong parallel between the ignorant behavior of certain ones in China and the idiots in this country who worship a Middle Eastern god and imitate the behavior of Middle Eastern men!!
The rigidly unyielding mentality of the extreme Middle-Eastern-god-worshipping religious right in this country deny the reality that children today (in fact, all down thru history) have been sexually active from a rather early age. But, it's in our genes, too.
In pre-history, most humans rarely lived past their twenties. Some who were tougher, or perhaps luckier, lived into their 30's or 40's. However, at that time period, women had much shorter lives than men - more accurately, girls had much shorter life spans than boys - therefore, in order for the species to survive at all, the girls had to start reproducing very soon after they began menstruating. That's one of the reasons there's so much superstitious propaganda surrounding menstruation and a girl's first menstrual period...

I fail to see what the above post has to do with anything we were discussing.
StAnn, yes there is a big difference in simply having a messy house and neglecting a child like the one in this story. That house was beyond being a little dirty. From the way it sounded, the only way to clean that mess would be to burn it down. I can just imagine the rats and roaches running from the burning place.

Ziddina, there is no such thing as mandatory birth control in the USA to my knowledge. I also never said anything about liberals preventing access to birth control. I'm really not sure where you're coming from.
Let me tell you where I'm coming from. My uncle, who was mildly retarded, married a woman who was also mildly retarded and psychotic. They had two children. One of them is a little higher functioning than his dad and is a drug dealer and has a gambling addiction. He has gone on to have two children, also very low functioning. He has been in and out of prison. If he were five IQ points lower intellectually, he'd probably be in a group home.
The other child is mentally retarded and psychotic.
Both boys were neglected as children because their parents weren't capable of caring for them. They spent a great deal of time at my house with my parents caring for them, whenever their mother was in the asylum for her monthly suicide attempt or other psychotic behavior.
Now the boys are 48 and 45 years old. The 48 year-old lives with me, because there is no one else to take care of him. He is on medication and is about as stable as he can get, but he often sleeps with his shoes and socks on to make it harder for the people he "sees" to keep from cutting off his feet. We put an exterior lock on his bedroom door so that it can only be opened with a key, because he's afraid people will come in at night and try to steal his brain. He has padlocks on his entertainment center, closet, etc., in his bedroom so that "people" can't get into his room when he's gone and steal his DVD's. He does have a job (Goodwill) but has attacked his supervisors at Goodwill for trying to pull his teeth. He comes home from Goodwill and tells stories of how staff have been going around, beating his fellow consumers, knocking them to the ground, and pulling their teeth with pliers. (All imagined, of course.)
The world he lives in, the one in his mind, is a horrible place to be. It's filled with evil, violent people who want to hurt him in unimaginable ways.
His parents shouldn't have had children. But it was their right.
Of course, at least he can bathe and dress himself and doesn't wear diapers, which is a step up from my autistic son.
His parents are both deceased and my grandmother and my uncle both begged me to take in my cousin upon my uncle's death, so I did.
His dream is to have his own apartment, have a girlfriend, and have a "real" job at someplace like McDonald's. He is bored at Goodwill. But he'll never be able to live on his own; he's too psychotic to keep a girlfriend, if he could find one; and he can't work in a real job because of his psychosis. He is not happy with his life at all but the life he has right now is the best life he can have. He can't improve his circumstance.
His parents shouldn't have had children. But my cousin has the right to have sex and have children, if he can find a girlfriend. If he does, who will be around to take care of them?
