Everyone is giving you good advice. I have two children who have been hospialized several times, it's never easy.
I can add is to make sure he gets a thorough physical. While my kids have chronic depression, my son also had undiagnosed Crohns disease and my daughter had a thyroid condition. Treating these problems helped their depressions too.
This is not going to be a quick fix type of problem. Accept what he says, even if it hurts. With a therapist's help you will find the middle ground and have a good relationship in spite of the depression. Get some rest while he's in hospital, you need to take care of yourself.
You have my prayers and best wishes.
I don't know what to say. My heart goes out to you and your son.

We have our first "family" meeting today at 3:30. Thank you to all of you you are my soft place to fall. I cant read your PMs for some reason so I hope someone can help with that.
Im nervous ...this is all so foreign.

I have gotten that message while trying to read PMs, too, Hon... usually if I just go back to the previous page and go in and try it again, the "refreshing" of the page fixes it... try it again...
Love,
Baba.
Wuz, be glad that your son's feelings were discovered before he could act on them. Teenagers are more likely to act on their impulses than older people. I spent 6 weeks in a psychiatric ward when I was in my 20s, about 1 week of that stay on suicide watch. With now-obsolete medicine and discredited Freudian therapy, I still managed to get better.
Now they have great medicine and a better understanding of teenage angst. If your son wanted to be admitted, that's the best sign of all. He will get better with help.
As sad as I know this day is for you, it could be, as you noted, much worse.
My thoughts are with you and your son.
WLD, my heart goes out to you.

What a remarkable young man that he was able to open up to the therapist to the point he agreed to go to the hospital. Clearly he appreciates what you have done for him.
Take care of you and be there for him
