Last week my wife and I were returning from a trip to the store and she starts talking about how amazing the bible is and how one should really not need to take any science classes, cause everything that one needs to know is in the bible. She sites the creation story on how it is all in the bible that there was first water, then earth, then vegetation.........I really did not even know how to reply. I asked her if she ever really critically read Genesis for what it said, it is an interesting story, but there are many inconsistencies and even contradictions within the written word.....but of course she attributes that to the mistakes of man recording the information, since every word of the bible is of course inspired by Jehovah. I was pretty silent after this, really not knowing what to state.....and am still a bit perplexed. Yes there are many great examples of how one should live in the bible, but also many other examples that are not how we should live, multiple wives, holding slaves, stoning to death disobedient children and the often degradation of women...... She then spoke about how the bible is the only place where this sort of information resides, I asked her if she had ever looked at the Koran, and told her how many of the stories in the bible are paralleled in the Koran, well of course the Koran copied the bible.......

Wait a minute. "...atributes that to the mistakes of man recording the information,..........every word of the Bible is of course inspired by Jehovah..." So there are mistakes of man recorded in the Bible while those very mistakes (every word) are inspired by Jehovah? Poof, argument gone.

Ask her about where god in all his genius created plants before the sun... That was a nice trick! The bible is one of the most ignorant books on the planet... Ridiculous piddle, lies and ignorance on every page!

Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mindbogglingly useful could have evolved purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as a final and clinching proof of the non-existence of God. The argument goes something like this: "I refuse to prove that I exist," says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing." "But," says Man, "the Babel fish is a dead giveaway isn't it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves that you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED." "Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly disappears in a puff of logic. "Oh, that was easy," says Man, and for an encore goes on to prove that black is white and gets himself killed on the next zebra crossing.

    Hi, insearchoftruth.

IMHO, originally, the Bible is a book which should not be interpreted literally.
So, if a sensible person reads it, he will understand that description of Genesis is a "fable." (I think)

    For instance,
The serpent which talks (Genesis 3:1),
The God which walks in the garden (Genesis 3:8),
A sword that was turning itself continually (Genesis 3:24),
    People's age (Genesis 5:27), etc...

I have not denied value of the Bible now.
(I always interpret the Bible symbolically and figuratively.)

Furthermore, even if the Bible is marvelous, it does not mean that Jehovah's Witnesses are right.

Stellar evolution, brown dwarf stars, galaxies, the periodic table, protozoa, mitochondrial deoxyribonucleic acid...

I must have missed those items last time I read through the Bible.

Oh, it's even better than that. How about Israelites being so numerous they could have stretched in a line across the entire desert. More gold in Solomon's temple than exists on earth. Several billion more quail than have ever existed.

If you believe in ad-hoc miracles, you can believe in absolutely anything. I don't even bother anymore.

The bible doesn't even know basic geometry.

I learned in gradeschool that a sphere is not a circle.

I learned in Hebrew school that upon the circle from Isaiah 40:22 literally means Compassed

If you don't like the version you have then read another or else learn Hebrew.

    Bible in Basic English
It is he who is seated over the arch of the earth, and the people in it are as small as locusts; by him the heavens are stretched out like an arch, and made ready like a tent for a living-place.

    Douay-Rheims Bible
It is he that sitteth upon the globe of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as locusts: he that stretcheth out the heavens as nothing, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.

I am sure God knows basic geometry. You are going to need it to create the whole universe :)

    All the best,

    Stephen
