Perhaps some of our more rigorous biblical scholars could weigh in on the meaning of the bible with regard to the shape of the earth. I thought that the authors of the bible did mean that the earth was a disk since that was the commonly held view at the time it was written?

drwtsn32 beat me to the biblical 'science' that tells us pi equals three.

Isn't there something in the bible about one of the Isrealite temples having rivers of mercury?

Mercury weighs 13.5 metric tonnes per cubic meter (or 112 pounds/US gallon if you prefer archaic units) , lead floatsin mercury it's that dense. And yet some bronze age goat herders managed to get a river of the stuff?!

just had to look up Is40:22. Apparently the Hebrew word in question is chuwg (translated circle, vault etc). The context of the verse suggests (to me) that the word be translated vault. The sky does seem to have a visibly vault/dome like shape which would explain why the writer used the term. Also Chuwg only conveys one dimensionality. So even if it was translated circle or compass it would convey the idea of a flat disc like coin shape to ancient readers. Apparently the Hebrew language did not have a word to convey a spherical shape. But still, I think it is more likely that Isaiah was trying to convey an arch/vault shape in harmony with what he could observe for himself.

full marks to Isaiah (or whomsoever wrote the book) for empirical observation though

The Bible lies. First, I have never felt spiritually fulfilled after going to church or reading the Bible--I felt better answered after reading a well-written science book. Plus, wasn't most of the problem with enforcement of the First Dark Ages because people were using science to rip the Unholy Bible to shreds?

Believing that the Bible teaches science is what led to a thousand years of the dark ages.

Ha ha- where in the bible does it say that pi = 3?? that is a good one.

There was a state (or school district?) that wanted to change pi to 3... easier for the kids to remember or something? Maybe that was a bible-based decision...

I shudder to think how I believed that the bible had the lastt word on science...

Up til like the last year of undergrad!! eek!
