Dropping the pounds....

I have never been fat - exactly. But I have been overweight most of the past two decades. Lately it has settled around my waistline.

So, I decided to find a way to lose it without falling back into bad eating habits - a lifestyle change.

I have taken a few steps and began earnest effort to start moving the scale southward last Monday, so I am 8 days in.

Here is what I am doing:

    • Eating 80% protein and 20% fruit, vegatables and non-processed foods.
    • Cutting out 100% of sugar and bread.
    • Adding little or no salt to my food.
    • Picturing myself naked every morning when I step on the scale, and trying to keep that image in mind every time I am tempted to eat things that are contrary to my plan.
    • Converting hunger pain to a feeling of accomplishment, a goal fulfilled. [Not as hard as one imagines]

I have also eliminated regular colas and replaced them with an occasional [the active word here] diet soda.

This is from a die-hard carb junkie. I am enjoying this change. I feel in control. I am nourishing myself, not just eating to fill up. Much of it might have been just habit, or filling emotional hunger perhaps. I will not become totally fanatical. But I am not even hungry for cake-chips-pizza-etc. I have had hamburger - but on a plate without a bun.

So far I am down about 8 pounds. My energy level is sky high. I feel terrific. Even if there was no weight loss, the positives would be enough to make the changes. Anyway just wanted to share.

Keep it up. I am 50 years old now and three years ago this summer I weighed 285 lbs. After experiencing the near death of a co-worker, I decided it was time to take better care of myself. So I began by cutting out my sugar intake and eating more protein. I was able to get down to 185 in just over a year and am working out everyday to keep it the weight at bay.

Here's what actually worked for me:

    EQUIPMENT: Pencil, paper, and magnet

    FOOD: Anything I wanted ...

NOT NEEDED: Scale, tape measure, membership to anything

EXERCISE: Acurately wrote down the exact items and quantity of everything I consumed for 30 days. Put ot on the fridge door where I and everyone else could see it ... checked it daily ...

CONCLUSION: I wasn't holding water, suffering from an underactive thyroid, experiencing low metabolism or been cursed with a genetic defect. I was simply consuming too much "stuff" and wearing it.

After the first month, although I had not mentioned my intent, outsiders began to tell me I looked thinner. That was two years ago. have kept my weight under control since then.

    P.S. I'm still ugly! Doesn't work for that ...

Well done Jeff, keep i up. I lost 70lb recently and feel on top of the world. Now like you I stick mainly to protein fruit and veg with the occassional treat.

Don't forget to drink plenty of water especially if your hungry, it staves off the cravings for a while.

Good for you BZ. 70 lbs is a major accomplishment.

I need to loose maybe 25 or so. I have been the same weight forever - time to take it off.

my husband and I are on the last (10th) day of the Master Cleanse Fast. So far we've each lost about ten pounds. But we also exercised through the whole thing, so we wouldnt lose any muscle. I think your new way of eating sounds very healthy. You go boyyyyyy!

I did a lot of what Jeff did, cutting out comfort and junk food, sodas, eating the correct portions, low sodium, low fat. I weighed in twice a week, same time of day to keep tabs on how I was doing. I actually looked at myself in the mirror and pictured myself being able to go on the beach without a shirt...something I was embarrassed to do for the last few years. I was pretty slim as a kid and and young adult so being fat, yes I had to admit it...I was fat, was embarrassing to me. I didn't give up comfort foods completely. I saved pizza and burgers for treat only items once a month or so. I started cooking at home. There I can control the fat amount and the sodium amount. Leafy green vegetables and I became friends...something I hardly ever ate before. Fruit became my afternoon snack. The only thing I didn't give up was beer or booze.

But in addition to the lifestyle change in eating habits, I started exercising. I was religious at it for 9 months. When I started exercising the pounds fell off. I'm now down to where I want to be, but I continue to exercise at least three times a week and eat a balanced, well portioned diet and I've found I can cheat once a week on comfort foods and a couple of sodas.

80% protein? Sounds like the Atkins diet.
