most JW pedophiles don't have criminal records imo and it is very unlikely that that is going to change. But I guess any sort of tightening up of procedures is a good idea but as Jamiebowers said, there is a distinct possibility of more thorough coverups.

I thought the WT said that a proven Paedophile would never be appointed? I heard that while I was still in.

But the WT should have a child protection policy in place in every Congo. including CRB and background checks, whether the law requires it or not.

Right On, Wobble! Years ago my Dad was telling us how their congo. was ripped off by someone involved with the Treasury and Accounting. I asked him then if they had done a background check on the guy. He said "No". I told him "You guys are going to be targetted then." That was about 20 years ago.

A couple of years ago, my father told me that they had a pedophile in his previous congregation. I asked if they did anything about the guy and he said "No". I was shocked and very quietly told him '"'People won't join the organization if they know that pedophiles are amongst you and that you do nothing about it." I was very angry but tried not to show it to him. One more reason I could never join this farce. I don't want my name associated with this kind of thing.

This clearly shows the orgs. willingness to appoint a pervert as long as its not too early. Sufficient time should have passed by first so that he's not the talk of the steamy any more and all the bros in the congregation, including anyone he raped, have forgotten all about it and now think he's a good guy. I'm not sure how this fits, but do others in a similar position as Elders already submit to criminal reference checks? Priests, pastors, sunday school teachers etc? I don't know the law in regards to clergy..I do know that it is common in many organizations where staff are in direct contact with children, to have a CRC done prior to hire and the cost of that is borne by the applicant - usually reimbursed by the employer upon hire - but I am not sure if the clergy already do it in other 'religions'. wsammieswife.

I don't know if the advice given in the July '98 letter has been updated ?

If not it damn well should be !!! Everybody knows that a paedophile is a danger to children ALL their lives,how long ago they offended is not relevant,another example of "God's Spirit Directed " Org. being ignorant, and uncairing for those in their charge,if they really were in charge of Christ's little ones how do you think he would feel about their attitude?

I dont think there has been a recent update...not sure. Password protected was an elder just about a year ago and I'm sure this was the letter he showed to my husband. He was aghast at the content and the focus on the law suit payouts. Anyway, even if it has been changed/updated how many paedos got left unchecked up until that point and how many young peoples lives were/are ruined as a result ? It wont ever leave them........!
