Sammielee, I don't know about other churches but now, as a Catholic, anybody working with children, including the priests, has to be fingerprinted, background checked, and take a class on child protection. I had to do it just to help out with vacation Bible school. The parish pays for it, in my case.

I really don't see why the WTS doesn't do it just to make a show of good faith, although they don't really have any.

I agree St. Ann...it doesn't hurt at all and it's such a low cost involved for safety. One small gesture could improve the image alone of any organization dealing with children and/or sensitive subjects or counselling, so even from that standard it would be a good move.sammieswife.

    This document is puzzling.

It states the dubs 'put in place supervision measures' to ensure he doesn't victimize any more kids in the hall.

It states the dubs assured authorities he would never be re-appointed to a leadership position.

Since when has any kh ever done such things?

What scares me about background checks for elders is that these evil bastards will exert even more pressure on victims to keep quiet, so there are no records to be found.

I hope that will be far outweighed by the many victims who leave the org or who were never part of it to begin with.

The idea of conducting background checks is gaining momemtum in churches across the spectrum.

What used to make my blood boil was the fact that if there were any abusers in the hall , then only the elders were privvy to that information. No-one else got to know about it , hence they could actively look after their children and families while the rest of us were oblivious.

i still think the new rules brought in by the charity commission regarding the protection of vulnerables and the responsibility of registered charities rang the death knell on the book study nights in private homes.
