That guy was kinda cute in a nerdy way. Too bad he's too stupid to know that not all Christians are fundies.

From a European perspective this seems completely surreal. You would have to go back to the very beginning of the 20th century (around the separation of church and state in 1905) to find a similar level of aggressivity on both sides in France -- and even the frontlines would not exactly coincide, since there were quite a few theists on the anti-clerical side. Britain may be somewhat different from continental Europe in this respect, although I suspect the most vocal British pamphletists (e.g. Dawkins) are mainly targeting the US audience.

Want intelligent, deep, respectful, even spiritual atheism? You need much more atheists. 1.6 % is ridiculous: it suggests that only the militant atheists declare themselves as such and makes atheism a cause, which is probably the worst it can be. When declared atheists and believers (of any kind) are about equal in numbers, with an even bigger number of agnostics and indifferent people in between, you may find that the discussion gets smoother and more interesting (and, btw, moves away from the "existence of God" issue, which is arguably the most sterile item in both theology and philosophy).

Is there such a thing as an atheist in reality?

I was an atheist until I realized that I simply lacked the faith and conviction necessary to be one.

You know what Lacan said? Only theologians can be true atheists.

But the type of discussion this sentence calls for implies a displacement (or dis-location) of the problem of "God" (a metaphorical or "second-degree" God) which is only possible when the 1st-degree debate about a "literal" God "out there" is appeased (although not solved of course). I.e., when "atheism" and "theism" in the ordinary sense are equally accepted and respected in society. In the words of Gabriel Séailles (1852-1921), one of the main actors in the French 1905 crisis, "that one might be an atheist without being deemed wicked, and that one might believe in God without being deemed an idiot."

"stop whining that as the majority we get to push our way upon you."

Just like those pesky negroes who kept saying simply because they were the minority didn't mean they could get pushed around or have another's values pushed upon them. Yeah, I mean really they should've just stopped whining about it, they were so annoying.

Has anyone mentioned the nazi's or Hitler yet?

Cuz I was wondering when we'd get to that.

Dude, that's a lousy comparison. Seriously. It works about as well as a dookie in the urinal.
