thinking of writing a book this summer

After brainstorming a couple hours, I'm thinking of writing a book about a man with a wife and two kids. Wife and possibly two kids get into accident and become permanently disabled, wife braindead. Man, who's had a crush on wife's friend, becomes torn between being faithful to his wife and moving on with her friend, and the book centers on his search for answers that are not there.

But then, I think this may be more sappy than I want to do, maybe I need to include some kind of supernatural element. Shouldn't be hard to do--1,000 words a day, and I'll be done by the time school starts in the fall. Anyone got any good ideas?

I'm through with WOW for the foreseeable future. I've always wanted to write a book, and I think this summer is as good a time as any to start.

Go, JD! Have you written a book before?

I have been working on mine for quite some time now. I write 2000-3000 words every morning, but then a lot of that gets edited out. I don't think I'll have it done before the end of summer, but boy wow wouldn't that be wonderful!!?

I am a firm believer that you have to let your characters develop the story for you. The plot line sounds good so far, not too sappy, but you know, start writing and see where it goes.

No. I've written a lot of short stories and some poetry, but have never worked on an extended project like a book.

Do you know how you are going to go about doing it?

    Microsoft Word.

Seriously though, what do you mean? Character development? Scheduling writing time? I figure I need to set aside a couple hours every day during the time when I'm in a productive mood. Other than that, haven't thought about it.

Right now, I'm torn between writing in the first person or the third person. If first person, single narrator or multiple narrators.

I meant how are you going to write a book? LOL.

    Uh, let me think here...

Are you going to write a chapter a day? Are you going to just write lots of little sections and then lace them altogether later? (I.e. short stories on a theme)

Obviously you do not know, because you said you did not know. But that is what I meant, I guess.

Determining your productive time of day is good.

Using Microsoft Word is useful - that is what I do.

    Writing every day is good.

I read a book about how to write a book - there are lots of them actually - and it said everybody writes sh*tty first drafts - just get it down. I thought that was some good advice. :-)

    GOOD LUCK!

I am just interested because I am figuring out for myself how to do this. Just thought I would pick your brain since you started a thread about it.

Yeah. I think it will be a good experience, even if no one ever reads it. Just getting everything down is something I need to work on. I've always sat and mulled things over in my head, pretty much writing them before I ever type a thing. I don't think that will work very well for a book though. Too long and too detailed. Will need to get chapters and ideas out, and structure it in a more external setting. Should be fun though.
