Cognac..A lot of these marketing schemes were designed to make a lot of money and collapse.....Winners made out Big Time..Losers lost..

Then a new one would come along......And..It would all start again..

As an accountant and business person I think that MLM's out to be outlawed. I haven't quite yet figured out how they manage to fly under the law's radar. They are inherently dishonest, legitimate businesses assign territories to their sales staff so they aren't poaching each other prospects. They will also tell you that they are an "XYZ $$$" per year organization, but neglect to mention that huge chunks of that money are for sales of marketing and motivational materials to their own people. They also generate big fees by throwing assorted conventions, sales rallies etc. Sound familiar? On of the results of all this is that most of them sell crap that can't be marketed any other way.

And yes, I've known a few JW's that wasted some time on them. I have yet to meet somebody that is actually making a living on an MLM.

    I completely agree.

Even the most popular ones like Amway and Mary Kay. They are all the same...quite unethical, borderline illegal. 99% of people that try to make money by selling their wares end up losing money.

My brother almost got sucked into Amway about ten years ago. The guy who showed up to our door (non-JW) came with a recommendation from an elder. Despite my pleadings, he got as far as buying the initial recruitment kit (in the neighborhood of $400, if memory serves me), but that's as far as he got with it.

Ironically, he decided to quit after attending a few of their weekly sales meetings. He said it reminded him too much of Pentecostal-style gatherings, but instead of God they talked about money. If you knew him, you'd understand that he's incredibly terrified of the dreaded demunz and thought he might get possessed by those people, so he stopped going. Sigh.

I felt bad for the recruiter. He was thoroughly brainwashed and certain he'd be a millionaire within 3 years, just like his mentor. He constantly fed himself Amway propoganda in the form of written material and audiotapes. He attended 3 weekly Amway meetings and conventions every four months. To echo JeffT above, sound familiar? It's eerie how much Amway's organization resembled the JWs, but that's another topic...

As a successful salesperson I was approached by every half wit JW with a sales plan. Without exception, they all sold the holy sales routine to help u pioneer. I was very open for my contempt for their tactics.

I remember going to a book study and the guy who owned the house was always on to the latest jw fad. He would have what ever was new on the shelves, so people would have to comment on them.

    Geez he was a scammer!!

The one program that half the JW's in the SFV in L.A. got into was Quarum. Basically a bunch of stupid gadgets and electronics that u could buy elsewhere for cheap. Well one day at the in-laws, (who were throwing a huge gathering), were meeting with "their people". I walked in. They started to chide me for not participating and how did I expect to make a living to support a pioneer. Out of my mouth flew the word "Honestly". Well the room hushed and the in-laws looked at me with great distane.

I asked. "Who is the top dog here. Who's the big seller?" They pointed to a brother and I asked; "What did u make last month?" His answer? $1300.00. Well I responded. I guess minimum wage is your goal. WOW! attacked from all sides! When things calmed down I stated that I'm debt free and living comfortably. Who else in this room can say the same?

oh BTW about one brother who also chastised me for getting a alarm system for the house. "I could have bought a Quarom alarm." Idiot! Well I went on to say that my Alarm comapny is 24/7 and is armed and patrolling. His alarm will make noise if u walked in the room. Doesn't call anyone, just makes noise. Well a few weeks go by and his house is broken into and they stole his precious Quarom alarm. Classic!
