I think he surely did something worse than breaking out your tail light for Karma to come down on him that badly!!!!

Well, I have to confess that I signed to him, "You are the biggest dumbass cop I have ever met!"

I don't think he understood that. Or did he?

JWdaughter Thank you. Every police officer goes on a call assuming the worst and hoping for the best. That's the job. And for all the bad cop stories on this thread, I can tell an equal amount of acts of heroism that go unreported. From where I stand, Gates was treated with the same respect which he gave. It looks more and more to me like Gates took the attitude that he was going to show this "stupid" cop a thing or two. Now he finds that he was wrong, and that the officer was genuinely concerned for the home owner and now he's having buyers remorse. It looks like the only way he thinks he can save face is to try to keep this about race, to justify his over reaction. I would think a man of Gates' stature would find the grace to admit he was wrong. We all make mistakes. If Obama hadn't made his remark, we wouldn't be having this discussion, and if he was a real leader he would admit he was wrong as well. Pistoff

No white person can understand what it is like to encounter law enforcement.

    What a racist statement!

Did Crowley EVER explain himself, that he was investigating a robbery, and then watch for Gates reactions? Or was he just on a power trip?

That's just silly. No cop goes on a call and gives an explanation to suspects before he has time to determine what's going on and who he's dealing with.

I call that good police work, not a power trip.

I can't believe all cops aren't prefect professionals. Keep up the good work and I thank you for your service.

Absolutely there are great cops. One of the best I knew was actually a JW that was wrestling with his career the whole time. I was struck by how this guy, doing such an honorable job has to constantly question himself in the congregation.

And yes even MP's can be alright sometime. I have to admit policing a predominantly 18-24 year old male population that is used to hard living and hard partying has to be one of the toughest jobs in the world. I would dread almost every call I got becuase at least one individual involved was very well trained in the use of weapons, more than likely had direct experience with using said weapons, and more than likely an aggresive alpha male type personality.

To deal with that on a constant basis has to give a bit of a complex.

I live right next to a large millitary base. I know what you mean. Thanks again

I don't think this has anything to do with race.

My gut instinct tells me that Gates was insulted that he was not recognized.

I think in his mind his own importance is over-inflated.

I think he perceives himself to be more famous than what he is.

My gut instinct tells me that Gates acted out of inflated ego and rather than admit that to himself, he is deflecting his embarassing arrogance into a racial thing because people are always hot for that sort of scandal.

Haven't you seen people puffed up with their own importance?

"What? Don't you know who I am? You can't do this to me!"

What would it have cost for Gates to be polite, cooperative, and appreciative of the security?

This was all about EGO....not race.

My own personal take is that both men acted on emotion. They had both worked hard to reach a certain status, only to have it undermined by the actions of the other.

In the case of Professor Gates, he felt his hard work and advanced education earned him the right to be viewed as something other than a predatory black man, which at least in his own mind, is how Crowley perceived him.

As for Crowley, he felt his professional accomplishments and body of work had earned him the right to not be viewed as just another racist white cop, only to be accused of that for simply doing his job. When both men felt their positions challenged, they lost it.

Yes we would. This discussion started with the Gates arrest. And he didn't "make a remark", he answered a question asked of him at a press conference.

and if he was a real leader he would admit he was wrong as well.

Hmm looks like you missed that one too. He is and he did. Unlike his predecessor who never took responsibility for anything.

Two males; two worlds; two cultures; two perceptions; two expectatons collided on that day.

All of us who have discussed this see things differently now.

    Peace.
