Unclebruce, I regret to say that I am one of the ignorant masses who has not read Lord of the Rings. That said, upon recommendation of my neighbor I do plan to go to the theatre to see it. (provided I can get a date)
Don't knock Star Wars based on "Episode I: The Disney Menace".
Go check out the book "Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays". You'll see SW in a different light. The book is better if you've actually seen the original trilogy.
    mike.

I may not like what you have to say, but many men gave their lives for your right to say it.

Star wars hands down but NOT phatom menace.Star wars was groundreaking, nothing like it had been done before.Star wars was the first bigtime sci-fi action blockbuster movie. It started the summer movie wars.Movies before starwars were dull, boring and developed at a snails pace, with the only exeption being jaws.Although I really enjoyed LotRs it will not impact the movie world the way star wars did.

Zerub, so america cant do sci-fi.Have you ever heard of aliens.Aliens is widely regarded as darkest sci-fi ever made.I agree that their arent enough unhappy endings out there, but thats just an american problem.Perhaps we should look to the aussies to provide us with dark unhappy endings, movies like mad max really send shivers up my spine. "2 men enter, 1 man leave!"....I'm scared!

I still don't wanna be a jedi or an r2d2 or a bloody dork vader or an american clingon! I'm not ungrateful but .. fire 1,000 fluff posts into cybespace and whadya get? A fellowship of the ring momento? A smeg'n Red Dwarf T shirt? A DrWho scarf? ... nah a secondhand trekie badge. :(

unclebruce: Hey Sarah (#2 daughter) You wanna come see LOTR?

    sarah: No way

    unclebruce: Hey it'll be fun

sarah: No it won't .. it's always the same boring thing.

    unclebruce: whatcha mean?

sarah: Good vs Evil and all that crap!

unclebruce: but i'm going for building ideas

sarah: (giggles) well that's ok dad.

    ZerrubberballedUncleBruce:

The mighty dollar rules and most American films cater to the lowest common 4 year old.
I watched an interview last night with Sean Penn (the yank actor) plugging his latest picture and he said the same thing about American films and the U.S. media in general. The frightening thing, as he pointed out, is that it's popular and it's what American audiences expect. He said we're addicted to happy endings, and that relationship films never go beyond the first five days of a relationship, never demonstrate what happens in the long term. There's some good stuff being done, but it's not easy to find and the bean counters and suits that make the decisions don't want to risk any capital on something that may not bring in the return on investment they're looking for.

P.S. One of my favorite all time films is an Aussie flick called "Bliss."

    Gambler,

Hmmm...we sure don't see eye-to-eye on this subject!

Star wars hands down but NOT phatom menace.Star wars was groundreaking, nothing like it had been done before.
Lucas said he wanted to return to the Saturday matinee serial. So it most certainly had been done before, though not as a big budget movie before.

Star wars was the first bigtime sci-fi action blockbuster movie. It started the summer movie wars.
No, Jaws did that two year previously.

Movies before starwars were dull, boring and developed at a snails pace, with the only exeption being jaws.
Or The Godfather, or Godfather II, or the French Connection, or the rest of some amazing 70s cinema that was blasted into adolescence oblivion by the bloated, dumbed-down summer flick.

Although I really enjoyed LotRs it will not impact the movie world the way star wars did.
It will do for fantasy what Star Wars did for SF in the cinema.

    G'day Cpiolo,

I saw a good little Australian film a few weeks back. It stared one of our favorite singer/songwriters Paul Kelly. "follow the moon" is a true story about racism, the loss of a child and ends with the main character walking off into the sunset with a 303 rifle .. followed by the crack of a gunshot.

Beautiful little film, the music was haunting, it touched on deep themes and held the audience spellbound.

    cheers, unclebruce

follow the moon"-Is that the movie title? I'm interested.

Now and then a good director will come along. Ever see Pi?

I haven't seen many aussie flicks...Romper Stomper was one of them, though. Interesting.

You guys ever see Winstanley? It's a indie film from 1974, and it's incredible. Very cool.

Any real great aussie flicks that have been ignored by the rest of the world? I'm always looking for something new.

seeker jaws and star wars are two tolaly diferent movies. Many people agree with you that jaws was the begining of big buget action adventure films but I dont veiw jaws as action adventure of sci-fi fantacy, its a horror filck.I am not a fan of the godfather movies and I still stand by my opinion that most of the films in the 70s were not that great, there are some exceptions of course.Technology plays a huge part in better cinama and better soundtracks.Take for instance two of my favorite movies, saveing privete ryan and The Last of the Mohicans. Can you imagine how much they would suck if they were made in the 70s or earlier.Just imagine the most beautiful musical score ever made for a movie in the last of the mohicans beinging replaced with a disco track.

    Gambler,
Have you forgotten about "In Search of the Lost Ark"?
I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.
