Talking of starwars (the best movies ever made), here's a link to a real audio version of the holiday special:

Its not very good quality but its the whole thing.
"The Empire Strikes Back" didnt have a happy ending, and I am sure "Attack of the Clones" wont either.
LOTR is an awesome movie, I'm going to seeing it again this weekend. However, I get so sick of hearing that "George Lucas ripped off....". Geez, first he ripped of that Japanese movie "The Seven Samuri" and now he ripped off "LOTR." I mean, common, the story of a small band of good guys fighting against a stronger group of bad dudes who are trying to destroy an innocent group of people goes back to the story of Moses versus Pharoh. Maybe all of these guys ripped off Moses! Hey, Moses better find a good lawyer.
Well gambler, it's clear that we have different taste in movies.
seeker jaws and star wars are two tolaly diferent movies. Many people agree with you that jaws was the begining of big buget action adventure films but I dont veiw jaws as action adventure of sci-fi fantacy, its a horror filck. However you want to classify Jaws, it is the movie held up as the one that began the summer blockbusters.
I am not a fan of the godfather movies and I still stand by my opinion that most of the films in the 70s were not that great, there are some exceptions of course. This is how I know that we don't agree on movies, for I view the early 70s as the last great era of American cinema. There have been great movies since then, but they are exceptions. In the 70s, there was an attempt to make serious, adult movies. Most movies now are for kids, even the ones aimed at adults are dumbed down to kid level. A movie like Taxi Driver could hardly be made now.
Technology plays a huge part in better cinama and better soundtracks.Take for instance two of my favorite movies, saveing privete ryan and The Last of the Mohicans. Can you imagine how much they would suck if they were made in the 70s or earlier.Just imagine the most beautiful musical score ever made for a movie in the last of the mohicans beinging replaced with a disco track.I will agree that special effects are much better now. The music too? I don't know about that. I don't recall any disco soundtracks, except in disco-themed movies. In any case, the best special effects and the most moving music can't save a bad script, and more often than not we get bad scripts today. Too often it's nothing but great special effects -- eye candy, satisfying to the eyes but not the soul.
It's one of the reasons I enjoyed Lord of the Rings: Instead of focusing on the special effects, they just used them in the background to tell a story. It wasn't about the effects.
roybatty has it right. To say that Lucas ripped off Tolkein is to forget that Tolkein wasn't all that original himself. He wasn't trying to be, and neither was Lucas. Lucas wanted to REMAKE the kinds of movies that he'd grown up watching as a kid, and he did just that. (Though I must say, ewoks and jar-jar binks ruined those movies.)
Tolkein wrote the same fantasy story we've seen a gazillion times before, but his work became a classic for a number of reasons, I think chiefly because he took more care to invent a real world where his characters lived. He invented a new language, "elvish", and a vast history of Middle Earth to add depth, which other authors would have left out because it didn't directly add to the existing storyline.
To say that a specific character (Darth Vader) is a rip-off of only one other (Sauron) is to ignore thousands of years of human storytelling.
Hmmm
Remember, LOTR was written in the 30s!!!
Seeker I agree with you that within the last couple of years hollywood has been after the teens. We can all thank titanic for that. And the quality of adult movies will suffer because of that.As far as your point about the early 70s being the golden age of movies I think we are all biased on the period of time we grew up in.Sorry if Im asuming your age.I will argue to the death that the 80s had the best cartoons, why because I grew up with them and are very nostalgic.Mabey thats why I dont care for the ealier movies, but I love 70s music, go figure.I am probably being to hard on older movies,I have not seen alot so mabey you guys could recomed some for me to watch.
