I also think that the music in a movie is responceble for much if not most of the emotion and "soul" of a movie. In my opinion a great or bad soundtrack can make or break a movie. The public often overlooks this fact but ask any director and they will agree.Would star wars have been as popular if it had a modern track instead of the beutiful clasical music john willaims made for it.I heard that if you broke star wars apeal into a pie chart one third of it would have been the music.I think the music placement in movies has gotten better over time with exceptions like star wars, jaws and planet of the apes(the original).

I stole away for a quiet afternoon of movie watching and I must say that Lord of the Rings was excellent movie making... excellent storytelling... excellent special effects... excellent cinematography. I haven't read the book and with all the personal pronouns that flew around in the dialog, I had the impression that reading the book beforehand would have enhanced the experience, but maybe not.

Many worthwhile highlights. Worth seeing again. I give it an enthusiastic thumbs UP!!

I thought it was interesting that previews of the next Star Wars episode were shown and I tell ya... the comparison between the two movies was frightening. George Lucas of Luke Skywalker fame was made to look so amateurish by comparison that if I were him it would be back to the set for me. He should go see Lord and take notes... lots and lots of notes.

    Gosh,

I heard that Harry Potter book had stole the premise from Toliken!

You know, a good force against a bad force, winning Against All Odds? Oh, that's the name of another movie, eh?

For the most part, many movies and books are based on that premise. As for happy endings, or the bad guy gets it in the end, yeah, that's been in vogue for a while here. I guess the majority of people don't want to pay $6-10 plus popcorn & coke (coming to around $20 bucks per person) to feel bad.

Now, a tear jerker? Yeah, sometimes they'll pay.

I think a fine movie was "Snowfall Among the Cedars" or something like that. Ethan Hawke - about Japanese internment during WWII. It didn't come to my city - rented it. Guess since it was a semi-unhappy ending, it would qualify with the criteria of non-happiness, eh?

Btw, there's a great little Irish film, don't remember the name of it, about family incest. Father anally screws teenage daughter for years (so that she's still technically a virgin), until his new baby daughter is born.....then he starts on her. Son secretly watches father screwing older sister, doesn't agree with it - confronts father, father beats the hell out of son, mother is oblivious to it all. Baby is sick, mother takes to hospital, son calls and tells her to ask doctor to do an exam as to why baby is bleeding into her diaper (doesn't explain whether anal or vaginal). Doctors refuse to allow mother to take daughter back home with father there - because the bastard's raping infant one way or another.

Son shoots his father's head off.......and son & raped daughter sit against the wall looking at their dead father. Camera fads to the green hillsides of peace..........

Yeah, it's life.......but it doesn't make money - as very few people want to see this kind of life.

I think the majority of people pay to go to the movies for escapism. And happy endings surely define escapism.
