How about not believing in the potentiality of humanity, to make living this life a better experience for all.

The JW ideology is that this life that we're are all experiencing now is not worth improving upon

since its all going to come to an end and be changed soon.

This involves many aspects of JW living , one being the unimportance of higher education, other may the unimportance

of keeping ones heath in good condition and so on....

It sets up a kind of irresponsibility within the conscience of an individual and to add to the problem of that mindset

is the ingrained apathy toward others since they have a personal redeemer in Jesus who's constantly

forgiving there sins. They may act loving and endearing on outside appearances, what really goes on

away from the Kingdom Hall is something quite different. The impending Armageddon may have been

a great and profitable publishing and selling topic for the Corporation but it doesn't necessarily mean

it did any good for people who indulgently bought into this kind of ideology.

A while back my wife and I were talking about this. She pointed out that therapists will tell you about the dangers of "I'll be happy when..." whether its loosing weight, making money, getting into a realationship, getting out of a relationship; whatever. You can't wait for "when." Then she said the New System as preached by JW's is the ultimate "I'll be happy when..."

I wonder about old friends who have spent there lives chasing this dream and are now going into twilight years with nothing to show for it. I was 38 when I got out. It's now been long enough that I've made other mistakes as well. It's called life.

So the final day comes and Jesus askes the JW's:

"so, what did you do with this awesome planet and the life we gave you?"

They Answer, we preached (what we thought was) your message and we waited for this day !

    Jesus, "great ! and...?"

    JW's: And what? that's it.

Jesus, "ok...so...you preached and waitd for this day? that's it?"

    *JW's look blank*

Jesus,"you didn't make the world a better place? take care of those that had nothing? feed the hungry? visit the sick? you know, like I told you in Matthew? or did you protect the earth? my animals and creations? work for a better world? find cures for diseases? you know, make the world a better place? "

    'Waiting for the REAL LIFE'

The WT parallels The Matrix so much!!!

That is such a disturbing and destructive mentality.

Someone posted assembly notes that mentioned a talk that said something to the effect "How can you even possibly enjoy this life - this isnt the real life."

I am so tired of that mentality - I enjoy my gift of life everyday!!! I am going to live the HELL out of this life, and I am not going to look back on the time I spent peddling WT's with an underlying sense of guilt and fear and regret. The past is the past, and its time to move on. I am going to read books, study things I held off on because it was "worldly", enjoy the ride and enjoy THIS REAL LIFE

    "Waiting for the real life."

Doesn't this make it easier to allow one's baby to die because of the blood issue (even kidnapping a child to prevent them from receiving a needed blood transfusion)? It also makes it easier to p*** away one's whole life without creating any value whatsoever for society or oneself. And, it makes it that much less of a burden to kill and/or eat one's baby. After all, the baby will be resurrected and enjoy perfect health in the New Dark Ages.

Nah, the whole theme of the bible is a hope beyond this life. What is wrong is the way the Society constantly says its near, just at hand, etc.

We each create our own reality. When a JW lives his/her life "for the truth" and immerses him/herself in it, then that is reality, that is what is comforting, what is known. It becomes real. The neurological connections in the brain are reinforced by constant propaganda. Okay, so I'm stating the obvious--but the fact is, the cycle of reinforcement is itself rewarding and becomes the purpose, rather than just the mechanism.

Which isn't to say that's the best way to live the 80 or 90 years we're each given. But it makes it a little easier to understand, and as another poster said, when you break out of it and start engaging with life on different terms, not only is, say, walking into your first philosophy class or first "worldly" party frightening, but that much more exhilarating.

Good thread! I have always pondered how many Einstein's, Michelangelo's, and Bach's the wt must have destroyed? How many brilliant children did they squash down? and how many more secret dreams did they destroy? sad.

I try to look at all the years lost, (that could have been) in a different way. After I got out of JW, I smoked ciggerettes for 10 years before I quit. When I quit I estimated I've lost about 3 years of my life. As a JW I estimated I lost 20 years of my life. Growing up as a JW I didn't have a choice. Smoking ciggertts was my choice. Both issues resulted in time lost in life that I wont get back. When I quit ciggeretts I wasn't mad at the tobbaco company for making them, but I was mad at the WBTS for their bullsh*t ways. If I look at the WBTS like I do the tobacco co. It make me less upset at them and I'm able to move on better with my new life.

    'Waiting for the REAL LIFE'

Agreed-that robs the JWs of life. The thing is that real life kicks in with Jesus

    John 10:10 (New International Version)

10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

JWs are robbed of life because they are given a false Jesus. All the lies that they are told in regards to Him are highly destructive. Here are some

    • That He is not God but "a god".
    • That He was created and was/is the angel Michael.
    • That He never was resurrected to a physical body (the hope of resurrection for all believers hangs on this fact).
    • That His name is not the most important name in the bible.
    • That His name is not the name by which we can be saved.
    • That He did not created all things (i.e. the universe).
    • That He did not die on the cross.
    • That His Spirit did not go to heaven when He died.
    • That His blood and body was not sacrificed for us all to receive in propitiation or atonement for our sins.

    All the best,

    Stephen
