How do you organize your music collection?

If you elect to keep it only on hard drive, just make sure you have it backed up to more than one hard drive. Hard drives can and do fail and the cost of the material on them far exceeds the cost of the hard drive.

Yeah I have ripped DVDs too, but they take a heck of a lot of space. I compress some for computer viewing but I like the full files for backup.

R, I have a ton of CD's, and I prefer it that way. They are all on my computer too, but no way can I get rid of those CD's. Anyway, they are alphabetical within the genre.

We also have tons of movies. We used to have them on the shelf, but we were overcome. My new system is, the disc goes in a "suitcase", and the cover goes in a binder. We tried just making a list of all the titles, but I like to look through the covers when I am looking for a movie. Those are just alphabetical, but one day I would like to do genre as well. They are also listed on an IMDB list.

Oh Doe! I like to have them in my hand, look over the cover, etc. etc. Vinyl covers were even better.

If you don't like the sound of spinning disc drives you can chuck the hard drive out and use solid state media.

Nosferatu uses an old Pentium and Damn Small Linux.

Most stuff on radio sounds like crap....dynamically compressed up the gazebo. But a good way to discover new tunes.

FTR, its illegal to rip a CD and then sell or give away the CD while keeping the .MP3 copy.

I rip all my CDs to my laptop, and then keep my CDs in a giant binder along with some movies/video games... Not really in any particular order. The cases I have stuck in a box somewhere back home.

Just don't forget to backup the music if you don't have the CD anymore!!! (That's how I lost my Fiddler on the Roof original cast recording... )

Heck, even before I stored things on the computer, I never had a lost cd problem. I learned early on to keep a simple rule--one goes in the player, one goes in the cover. Never ever, I repeat never, leave a cd out of its case. Problem solved. It's like a wiping before you wash your hands sort of thing.

I assume from the context that there is an entire family involved in the mess. LoL. Its always easy to take care of your own toys... Its when other people start playing with them that you start having problems.
