Why, hello, there Daddy-O... and peace to you!

May I take a 'crack' at it (no, my Lord is not involved - LOL!) I have always loved this song and been intrigued by its 'symbolism'... but I never got the Buddy Holly thing out of it. I got:

That you are pulling our 'leg'... so....

    Peace to you!

    A slave of Christ,

    TR,

: does it have anything to do with driving a Chevy to a levy?

    No.

    Unc,

Who's Van Gogh? I've never 'eared of him.

    To the Rest of You,

It does NOT have anything to do with Buddy Holly's death. Don McClean made that quite clear and he made it quite clear that a newspaper reporter made that interpretation up.

    Farkel,

I have no idea what the writer of the song meant, but I do know what American Pie means to me. Religion. "The three men I admire most, the father, son and holy ghost they took the last train for the coast, the day the music died"!

Geez you're a contankeranius ol' farkle today

I know Don McLean said it had nuth'n to do with peggy sue, LaBamba or the big bopper .. if i remmember right he said he didn't have a clue what it meant himself. You just teasing folks eh? What about the hidden watchtower meaning in mid-summer nights dream? What about David Bowie's life on mars? What about "Love me tender" was that a prophesy of Elvis becoming a hunck a hunka burn'n love?

unclebruce, not impressed with Rutherfords 'taming of the shrew'

PS: VanGogh was a daft deaf dutch painter of sunflowers.

    Mr. Farkel,

I was but a wee child when this song was popular but I remember it well as I listened to it from my baby crib. I do not want to say what is correct or not in the interpretations of the lyrics but here is a web site that includes a letter from Mr McLean in regard to their meaning. There is also a break down of the meaning of each verse. Since I was just a baby at the time I will let you older people use your own discretion about what it says.

PS. VanGogh was not deaf, he had tenitus which is an inner ear disorder that causes constant ringing in his ear. That is way he cut it off, not because he was crazy. His contribution to impressionist art was pinnacle in its stile and use of color.

    seven006,

The interview with McClean was on KFI 640 AM, a 50,000 watt clear channel station. McClean specifically stated that he has intentionally not explained much of the song to anyone and also specifically stated that a newspaper reporter had himself attempted to explain it for him.

It's interesting to note that the link you gave did NOT state that the letter from McClean gave the interpretations of each verse. Instead, the letter from McClean said, "You will find many "interpretations" of my lyrics but none of them by me. Isn't this fun? " That's pretty much what he said on the radio show, too!

My only evidence is from the author of the song himself. Unless he was lying, it sounds like someone is trying to perpetuate the myth. If you look at the link to McClean's own website, he does not give any interpretation of his most famous song.

    Damn it Mr. Farkel,

I said I was just a baby when the song came out, what the hell did I know at the time? I was just trying to write a big boy post with all the cool people, that's all. I thought American pie sucked. Vincent is one of my favorite songs. I was in a small pool of designers who bided on doing Don McCleand web site as well as Bob Dylon, Michael McDonald,Van Morrison, Match Box 20 and a few others.

I did do Terence Trent DArby's site http://sumagroup.com/ttd/ as well as Bob Neworths (Bob Dylon's best buddy). I lost the contracts to do those sites because I was too expensive. Record companies are cheep!

I really don't have a clue what is the truth or not. I was just trying to be your pal. I guess I screwed up. Robers right, I'm just a buffoon.

I like your picture icon, does that count?

    Dave
