It just goes to show that planned obsolescense is built into nealry every layer of the computer and software industry, not because they're always making better products (arguable), but because they need to keep making money and dipshits like us can't do anything about it even if we wanted to.

After spending millions of dollars in numerous "upgrades", our users here aren't doing anything any differently or more efficiently today than they were 10 years ago. They still type documents, send emails, crunch numbers and surf the internet. The only real difference is USB devices, Blackberries, and a handfull of users who do a bit of video editing. Certainly nothing to justify millions of $$ in "upgrades". It's just a fucking merry-go-round and we keep paying to stay on it because we've been conditioned to just shut up and pay.

    TD..

I tried to directly down load XP from the disc..Cold..

There is something built into Vista, that will not allow it..

    Unless it is Business Vista..

I have been to every tech site I could find ..

    To beat the system..

    I was literally told,I was S.O.L..

    "Shit Out of Luck"..

    More than once..LOL!!

Anything that gets you out of Vista is worth it...IMHO.

I use a variety of machines, some old, some new, I stick mostly to Mac OS X as my client (10.6). I also occasionally go to 10.4 and Win 98 for some specialty apps.

My home server is Windows, that's what was cheapest to build at the time, it's fine as long as I don't have to use it as a client.

My work life is XP (we rejected Vista, I think it was an auto-immune response).

If you have hardware that supports Vista, it will support 7; you'll see some better performance, better stability, generally better behavior. If the money is available, I'd do it in a flash.

Go for WIN. 7 then Outlaw and think about installing it on a new hard drive like a mentioned on my previous post,

you wont regret it and you'll be set for the coming years, because yes Microsoft will stop supporting XP soon as I'm told.

I know its a time consuming affair to rework into a new operating system but take your time at it , its really not all that bad and you

usually only have to do every few years. As a suggestion if you do decide to move over to Win 7 check with all your hardware manufacturers to see

if they have drivers out for their products, since Win 7 is a new OS.

Waiting a couple of months for manufacturers to catch up on their drivers is a good thing to do.

Windows 7 kicks serious ass. But is it worth upgrading from Vista? Hard to say. Generally I don't recommend casual users upgrade their operating system and instead wait until they replace the system. If you are going to format your system and reinstall Windows, well then it is worth considering an upgrade to Windows 7.

If you do an upgrade, I heartily recommend you AVOID in-place upgrades. Do clean installs. Yes, you have to back up your data and reinstall your apps, but you'll end up with a better-performing system.

Vista itself was ok, there really wasn't anything wrong with it stability-wise. If it is working fine for you, don't worry about upgrading. If someone is having stability issues with Windows, it is almost ALWAYS due to a buggy driver or bad hardware. This has been the case for a long time.

I heard that solid state drives were not ideal where a lot of rewrites take place.

The cheaper SSDs can have relatively poor write performance. If you get one with good read AND write performance, you won't have any problems in this regard. SSDs smoke hard drives.

    Homer..

    I have an on-line Driver Service.."Driver Detective"

    They specialize in Drivers..

The service finds missing drivers in your computer..

    And..

    Installs the correct driver..

Windows on solid state? That's like using a lawn mower to harvest your garden.

This must have been a old model, because if you read any recent bench testing by reputable

computer hardware reviewers, you will see exactly what I'm talking about.

I myself have had the fastest hard drives ever built and still have a couple I'm still using in my system,

running two drives in a raid array 0, you can get up to 400 read mgb. and 400 mgb. write transfer speeds

Most commonly used single hard drives used today run at only @50 mgb.

You definitely can't run the XP CD once Vista has booted up.

The trick is not to let Vista boot up at all. ---A cold-boot from the XP CD will bring you to this screen:

I promise that there is nothing in Vista that will prevent this

During the first year after Vista's release, I lost count of how many Vista machines I had to downgrade.....

Is it possible that you have an upgrade only version of XP instead of an OEM?

Thats good Outlaw that service may help you out.

Here's a very good explanation of what SSD can do and I can verify this since I have one in operation !

I'd suggest reading the whole article , one other thing I should mention is WIN 7 has been optimized for SDD in the use of a drive cleaning

program called TRIM, this is what I mention before about you never have to worry about Defragging any more. I have a OCZ's Vertex 120g

with Win. 7 as an OS. and it just flys.
