one other thing I should mention is WIN 7 has been optimized for SDD in the use of a drive cleaning

program called TRIM, this is what I mention before about you never have to worry about Defragging any more.

I haven't had to worry about defragging for the last 2 years since I moved to Linux. My system was one of the first that shipped pre-installed with Vista. I wiped it off and dual booted Linux with Win2K. I only use Windows for one app. Other than that, I've been a full-time Linux user. While everyone was crying about their slow unstable PCs running vista (and let's not forget about all the virus scares), I've been running the smoothest OS I've ever used.

Windows 7 may be 100% better than Vista, but you still get Windows Genuine Advantage (or whatever they call it now), many Windows-compatible viruses, the need to run Anti-virus and Anti-spyware software (which slows down your system and isn't guaranteed to catch everything), and the inevitable cost of purchasing the OS. I don't miss any of this and won't be 'upgrading' to it. Besides, Linux with Compiz still looks way better :)

Linux just announced that they have placed into their recent upgrade, TRIM optimization in their OS......good !

True to what you say about viruses regarding Windows but there are still much more programs that need Windows to operate properly.

With the latest Anti-virus programs like Norton 2010 or AVG you cant hardly tell there is one there running in the background.

This all comes down of course to how new your system is, with the combination of these new CPU's , RAM etc.

and these new Anti-virus programs they have done away with system slow down which was of course an obvious problem in the past.

windows 7 is nice but I haven't tried it out enough but thus far I like it. I HATED vista and stayed with the xp but 7 does look promissing and visually does look like vista. If you're running vista I don't know why you wouldn't upgrade or downgrade to xp as vista is crap IMO.

Nos, I am a big fan of Linux but its file system is not immune to fragmentation. Run fsck and you will see what level of fragmentation your system has. True, it is somewhat resistent to it, but it is not possible for a filesystem never to be fragmented (unless it defrags constantly on the fly).

    Compiz is cool, absolutely. :)

If you are having problems with your computer no matter what OS you have, well, you need to have this free tool:

    http://argente-registry-cleaner.en.softonic.com/

The Windows Registry is one of the key system elements of the OS, meaning you should always try to keep it in perfect shape with tools like Argente Registry Cleaner.

Argente Registry Cleaner analyzes the whole Registry in just a few seconds and finds all the invalid entries that programs usually leave behind after an incomplete uninstallation process. These entries can end up collapsing the Windows Registry and causing serious performance issues, but with Argente Registry Cleaner you have nothing to fear: the program will scan all the Registry areas, create a list with all found errors and provide you with the necessary tools to erase them. And for those of you who don't like messing up with the Registry, Argente Registry Cleaner also includes a backup option to be on the safe side. (As for me I just delete what ever it digs up, my computer has never ran so good, and its free, but I sent them a bit of money just to say thanks. Hootie hoo

Having the Device Manger automatically fix devices that aren't working at all is slick

    Now that would be cool.

Does Windows 7 let you save to the C: drive? I too haven't had any trouble with Vista, although XP is a much better OS in my opinion. I've been curious about 7 as well.

Vista itself was ok, there really wasn't anything wrong with it stability-wise. If it is working fine for you, don't worry about upgrading. If someone is having stability issues with Windows, it is almost ALWAYS due to a buggy driver or bad hardware. This has been the case for a long time.

That settles it. Thanks Dr. Watson.
