Police widen Night Stalker inquiry
(UKPA) – 2 hours ago
A Jehovah's Witness accused of raping and sexually assaulting 11 elderly women during a series of burglaries over the past 17 years could face further charges.
A district judge handed Delroy Grant, 52, back to detectives hunting a sex attacker known as the "night stalker".
Grant appeared at Greenwich Magistrates' Court charged with five rapes, six indecent assaults and 11 burglaries.
The attacks took place at addresses in Warlingham, Addiscombe, Bromley, West Dulwich, Orpington and Beckenham between October 1992 and May this year.
Police now have until Thursday to gather evidence, conduct further interviews and prepare additional charges.Prosecutors said investigators want to speak to him about a "large number" of other offences and further charges were "likely".
Denise Clewes, of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), said: "There is still evidence that needs to be gathered and officers have not had the time to do this."
Shaven-headed Grant appeared in the dock flanked by two women custody officers during the short hearing. Wearing a white police-issue long-sleeved tracksuit, he spoke only to confirm his personal details, giving his middle name as Easton. District Judge Angus Hamilton remanded Grant back into police custody and ordered him to appear at the same court on Thursday.
Grant, of Brockley, south east London, was arrested as he returned to his car in Shirley, Croydon, in the early hours of Sunday morning. He was held by detectives from the Operation Minstead inquiry which was set up in 1997 to catch a man targeting elderly women and men in their homes.
The attacker broke into the homes of pensioners, often disabling phone and electricity lines, before subjecting them to horrific ordeals. Some of his victims have died as Scotland Yard threw every possible resource into snaring the attacker during the lengthy inquiry.
Forensic officers continued their fingertip search of Grant's three-storey end-of-terrace home in Brockley Mews on Monday. Officers stood in the garden of the property where weight-lifting equipment, a punchbag and children's toys could be seen.

First, he is entitled to the presumption of innocence, and secondly, I think it is a bit unfair to start off the article with "A Jehovah's Witness..." That really does show some ignorance. If he was Anglican they wouldn't bring that to your attention, at least not in the first sentence.
I thought I would just beat the JWs on this thread to the punch.

Just watched this on news (England) and his neighbours are shocked, 'such an unassuming man, devoted to his wife and kids, a Jehovah's Witness'. His oldest victim was 93 according to report.

Of course he is presumed innocent - but we all know he is guilty wink wink.
The reason the press highlight the fact he is a Jehovah's Witness is because his membership of a wacky cult which has a history of sexual abuse problems and high profile criminal cases and investigations by the Charity Commission etc etc is material to the story.
Was he using his non-mainstream religious activities as cover for his crimes?
Was he using his non-mainstream religious beliefs as motivation?
And I could go on linking his non-mainstream religion with possible links to his crimes.
The JW's lurking here should be asking themselves how many times are they going to turn on their TV's and see yet_another_JW linked to sex crimes.

True...but according to reports he did not enter a plea this morning in the Magistrates Court. I hope if he IS guilty, then he will confess thus saving his (elderly) victims the extra stress of a trial.

The police have had the DNA recovered from his victims of the attacker for years, so if they match this to the guy arrested, it looks very damning.
He will also receive a trial by jury, and have a lawyer, so if his innocent, he will found so, though t if the DNA is being adduced as evidence, i would very surprised.

I suppose we will have to wait and find out if he was a baptised, active, JW, the press are quick to attach a label that will make the story even more lurid.
Assuming he is though, a pukker Witless, then the Dubs need to ask themselves how their loving God could allow this sick monster to do his awful deeds over nearly 20 years and not intervene.
Surely the All -powerfull Jehovah, who appoints men in the Congregation and sends Noo-Lite to Brooklyn could have alerted somebody to this guys sick condition ?

Lets not forget that whatever religion this man is, there are dozens of victims and a wife suffering from multiple sclerosis who need to see justice and be provided with support. At the end of the day, with all their faults, the R & F in her congregation will provide support for his wife and if he is found guilty his victims and their families will see justice, but will bear emotional scars for years to come.
