I remember one 'study' my Mum had - a pee-soaked old lady living on her own who wanted to go to the KH on a Sunday - she just wanted company really, and not much to offer in return.

Then there was the town tramp - the eccentric one with pots of money - living in filth but with a working grasp of ancient Bible languages and half of Russell's works under his bed.

Oh yes - that reminds me of the immigrant mother of 5 that spoke next to know English and was sub-normal intelligence.....etc etc

And that was just my Mum calling on that lot - multiply that by 100,000 JW's in the UK over a 20 year period and see how many misfits you can recruit.....

Most JW's will be frank and admit that there is almost zero probability of recruiting anybody older than 25 that is of normal or greater intelligence that has a family, career etc.

    From the Independent newspaper:

At the front of the house is a railway track. Across a footbridge, a few streets away, is a house where Mr Grant's wife, Jennifer, used to meet with fellow Jehovah's Witnesses. Women there said that Mrs Grant had been a member of the religion for about 20 years, before her illness.

They said that initially Mr Grant would only attend the house, or the nearby Kingdom Hall on David's Road, to drop off or collect his wife, but that he later became a Jehovah's Witness too.

However, his devotion was cut short by his wife's illness and he never went out knocking on doors with her. Because of her illness the pair stopped attending the Kingdom Hall and became "disassociated" – the term members of the religion use for Witnesses who have lapsed. Mrs Grant was later persuaded to return, but Mr Grant did not join her.

One fellow Jehovah's Witness, who knew the couple, said: "He got involved and came to a few meetings, but he was never very enthusiastic. She is a black lady and was very tall, slim and glamorous until her illness struck. After her illness she lost the use of her legs. She used to tell everyone 'look after your legs'."

    Thanks Dozy,

This is exactly what I feared, the Dubs will now say "Oh he wasn't a real Witness, just came along a bit to please his wife"

O.K So that is as maybe, but I hope this nuance is lost on the general public and they are more wary of the JW's than before.

But it does show that we need to restrain ourselves from comment to Dubs until we have the facts, going off half-cock on this one would not do our cause any good. i.e had I made my comment to my family about why did Jehovah not expose this guy, my Dub relatives would now have a let out.

Sadly Wobble, they ALWAYS use that excuse anyway (in my experience). Once a JW is exposed as doing something bad, they cannot be a REAL Witness by definition, as REAL JWs don't do anything bad.

I think there night be a perfectly reasonable explanation for this.

He might have been dropping off life saving litterature in local laundrettes at unusual hours so as not to wake his sick wife.

    ...and Santa is my Dad

wobble - like The Independent, I can't name my sources. A JW in his cong. speaking to the media is naturally going to downplay the role of UK's most notorious serial rapist and the subject of the longest running manhunt in UK police history. But its reasonably clear his primary religion of association was 'Jehovah's Witness', otherwise why would the media be sniffing around the edges - I'm sure they have called London Bethel...why no comment from there?

In any event this particular case will do little to convince an active JW that they should leave the religion - Jehovah did eventually expose this guy right?

"Wait on Jehovah" is a powerful thought-stopper that fits perfectly in this case.....

this guy sounds more and more like an xjw gone beserk if this is true

    perhaps he's one of us

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you lapse, you're not automatically disassociated. I think INACTIVE is the word they are looking for here.

Just for the record, from our sources, Delroy Grant was still KNOWN as a JW but was not regularly attending the meetings.
