I wonder what the elders would do with a character in a book one of the guys in my writers group is working on.

The character is trying to sort out is relationship with the woman in his life. Normally it was a clear cut division. If they were having sex, she was a girlfriend; if not they were just friends. In this case they were sleeping together, but not having sex. He wondered if perhaps he'd married her and didn't remember it.

It's nice to see you Farkle.

It was scriptures like that that kept me from getting baptised. Love Jehovah? How the hell was I supposed to do that? He was going to kill me if I didn't do everything he said ........... or ......... well .......... what my father said he said ......... or what the WT said he said.

I wished that I hadn't born into the Crazies. I would rather get killed at Armageddon without knowing it was coming.

    Cheers

In all seriousness for a minute: could it be that Jesus was just 'speaking their language' at the time? They were used to cold, unbending "commands" and "rules" so taking the whole previous history of these stubborn people, maybe he was speaking words they would know and that they would 'hear'. Then as that sank in, along with the example Jesus set on how to be, then one day they would 'get it'. To me we have to take in a whole context of things to understand why certain things were said the way they were. Just a thought..........wf

Just another fine example reminding me how little I actually thought about the words I read in the bible for all those years.

    Thanks for the post!

In men's minds is where the gods were first created and that is where they still remain to this day.

Is it logically within reason that an all encompassing omniscient god would exist, with conditional faults and who is also imperfect ?

    awilldflower,

:In all seriousness for a minute: could it be that Jesus was just 'speaking their language' at the time?

If that were the case, then the Bible wouldn't be comprehensible or properly understood except for "those" people at "that" time. That would mean that God didn't have any foresight to properly enlighten people of the future, or to put it another way, sacrificed the edification and enlightenment of future peoples for the benefit of people at "that" time. Any God that can't write words that could be universally understood by people of all ages and cultures should look for another job, preferably in the housekeeping or food-service industry.

:They were used to cold, unbending "commands" and "rules" so taking the whole previous history of these stubborn people, maybe he was speaking words they would know and that they would 'hear'. Then as that sank in, along with the example Jesus set on how to be, then one day they would 'get it'.

You should always be wary of Gods for whom you are always busy making up excuses.

    White Dove said:

How about an OMNISCIENT needing to go down to a city to see if it really is as bad as the rumors say it is.

Oh yes, White Dove that is one of my favorites! Don't forget that Abraham was negotiating with the Omniscient being (as if he were a child) beforehand.

Love.. If you define love as a warm fuzzy feeling what Peck called catharsis then No! You can't command it. The man at the pub crying into his beer while he tells the barmen how much he loves his family may have the warm fuzzy feeling: but is it love? When they are neglected waiting for their Husband Father to come home. The good Samaritan. Which one loved his neighbor and how do we know? By how he acted. The bible was written by Easterners where Love is largely defined as action. As Peck said in his book "The road less traveled" A truly loving person acts in a loving way even when he does not feel it"You must love the Lord your God ....Yes obey him and love your neighbor
