This thread was inspired by the poster here with that moniker. That name, for the first time in my life, caused me to think deeply about the scriptural real meaning of the phrase used in Isaiah, often used by Biblical defenders to show it's inspiration by God.

I googled the phrase, and among other hits, found this little blogspace with comments that echoed my thought on the matter.

    Found it interesting.

Cool, something nice to ponder. A sphere is not a circle and a ball is not a sphere. A cube is not a square. I like it.

Actually, Jonesie, (and this is only because I love you) a ball is a sphere.

    I'm going back to school.

Edited: A ball can be a sphere.

No - a ball is a sphere not a circle. Just like a frisbie is circular and not a sphere. A box is a cube not a square. A sheet of paper cannot be a cube.

Edit: Oh I see Jonsie's typo now. Had me confused for a minute Sylvia. LOL

A ball can also be an ovoid.

So when a co-worker described his sisters figure as being round. does he mean shes is a circle or a sphere?

    A sphere, of course.

Is a hula hoop a circle or a sphere?

Here is how Isa. 40:22 is rendered in the NRSV:

It is he who sits above the circle of the earth,

and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers:

who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,

and spreads them like a tent to live in ...

A poker chip is a circle, but it's not a sphere. In a 2-D perpective, a flat poker chip and a ball would look exactly the same.

Did they believe the earth was round, but flat?

Here is a very simple way to prove that a Sphere and a Circle are NOT the same thing:

    Volume of a Sphere: (4/3) * pi * radius 3

Volume (area) of a Circle: pi * radius 2

    The formula are completely different.

"In higher mathematics, a careful distinction is made between the sphere (a two-dimensional spherical surface embedded in three-dimensionalEuclidean space) and the ball (the three-dimensional shape consisting of a sphere and its interior)."

That's what I meant when I said that a sphere is not the same thing as a ball.

    Love you too
