I never got to wear pants/slacks. Last time I went into a KH was in the mid 1980's.
I have tried and tried to push my Mom into wearing pants to the KH or out in FS. She flat out refuses and says it would not show proper respect to Jehovah. I said Jehovah wouldn't care if she were naked. Adam and Eve were. She was horrified.
I also said since the men in the cong were doing it to keep her in subjection, she should show her cajones and wear pants as a statement. That statement being: I know Jehovah knows what's in my heart and wouldn't care if I'm wearing pants or a turban.
(She did wear a turban, as a fashion statement in the 70's. Carol Burnett wore on on her show and she thought it was a good look. (NOT) and decided she could copy it, plus it masked a bad hair day.)
Growing up in the 60's, the public elementary school I attended required girls to wear skirts/dresses. In 1972 when I graduated to Junior High, 'pant suits' were permitted. Then quickly slacks and jeans were allowed.
Since my parents became JW's in 1970, however, I was required to dress as befits a young christian woman. So had to wear dresses to meetings, in service, AND to school every day, rain or shine. There were only about a dozen times in 6 years of school that I was allowed to wear 'pant suit' because I had to walk to school and the snow storms were terrible.
More than once I came home with bloody knees that were chapped from the cold.
For meetings - and occaisionally service - I had a few pairs of leggings that I would wear with boots and under a long wool skirt to keep warm.
I am so happy to be out of that control. And almost as happy that I live in a warmer climate now.

They say it's because it reflects well on Jehovah's name, but it's really about control, control, control. I really think the old guys get off on being able to control women especially.
And to the point on the impression it makes on 'worldly' people, once I stopped at an elderly relative's house after service with my young daughter. We were both wearing skirts. My relative, who was a church-going, conservative type person, remarked "You're dressed up all the time. You look ridiculous".
Why don't these idiots take it a step further and ban short hair on women. After all, if they want to sound like fundamentalists with their dislike of pants on women why not go the whole way? That is what this is all about. So-called 'masculine' dress.
Their stand is unreasonable, especially in a frigid climate.
Somehow this reminds me a little of the offshoot mormon polygamist cults and the 19th century prairie dresses.
And I really liked that quote about "what the neighboring non-witness population thinks about slacks" - as if anybody in this day and age gives a damn about it. And the sisters need to consult the elders on what to wear? Who do they think they are - Ralph Lauren?
LongHairGal, I'm under the impression that they have verbally pushed women, especially older ones, to have long hair.
You know--a Woman's Hair is Her Crowning Glory.
Something like that. My Mom's hair is really long--she trims it herself. She told me women should have long hair. She referenced that scripture. I literally gagged.
She's turning into a bible figure before my eyes.
Long hair varies by congregation and region.
"Stylish" Sisters sport bobs to mid-length cuts
The rest of us with kiddos do ponytails and quick twist out of convience......
We have a community about 60 some miles away where most of the women (not of the same denomination) all have hair way past their tushies.
If I can't wear slacks or even (gasp) jeans I ain't interested.

Yes, it is an expression of submissiveness but its also a point that the WTS wants it adherents to dress up for the public,
this is suppose to make the organization stand out differently than ordinary Christendom and its followers.
Dress has always been a very important faction to the WTS., the outward image that they are trying to establish can probably go back
as for as Russell's door to door colportuers. In some ways its not any different to what a business wants to see of its employees,
when appearances are kept at a high level when dealing with the public.
This sort of dress code is simular with other religions as well,
such as Mormon, Mennonite, Hamish and the list goes on.
This not just exclusive to JWS.
