I remember once I had to miss seeing a friend move away and seeing him off at the airport because there was a stupid circuit assembly. My friend was not pleased. Nor was I.
When I was younger, I missed Sunday meetings all the time to go see my relatives.
One time we drove to the meeting but there was a marathon that blocked our way and drove traffic to a halt, so we decided to head back home. (Yippeee!)

September 20, 1973. It was our Thursday meeting night and I wanted to stay home in the worst way. In those days we didn't have a VCR and I'm certain most folks didn't either.
Bobby Riggs vs. Billie Jean King, the Battle of the Sexes. We got home just in time to see the final set conclude.
I'm certain if I was in the audience, coaching Bobby, he likely would have won.

When I was a MS, they had a couple day school for MS. They had it a local assembly hall. This was in the winter time, and the city I live in, our team was fighting for a Wild Card. This was right when phones started getting more advanced where you could see the news or latest scores. Brothers were going to the bathroom every half hour, or taking notes, while having their phone underneath their notepad quick viewing.
On a similar note, the hall I attend shares with another congregation and we rotate back and forth between the early meeting (9:30), and late meeting (1pm) anually, and I have to say I HATE the late meeting during football season. After football season ends, then the NBA heats up. I always end up missing the early games. Currently I'm at the late meeting, but even the early meeting has its drawbacks as you're expected to do field service after the meeting. If its not my turn to take the group out, or feed the visiting speaker, then I'm going home.

Several times on Super Bowl sunday. The last few years before I DA'd I thought watching the divisional and championship games was more important than going to meeting on Sunday.
I think I was right.

For TV no, that's why VCR's and DVR's were created.
It's not the same watching a pre-recorded event even if noone lets slip the result.
You can skip commercials...
But I had a game spoiled for me when I taped it because I had to go to the meeting. It was the NFC Championship game. If the local (if anywhere in the same state is considered local) team won they would go to the Super Bowl. They weren't my favorite team so I figured I would just tape the game and watch it after the meeting that day. After the meeting I stopped at the grocery store to get some beer and the few shoppers and all the staff were moping around..there was a definite bad mood feeling in the store. When I got to the cashier, the first thing out of her mouth was, "Too bad about the Panthers". Spoiled. I didn't even watch it.
