How many here desire 'Reality' over the fantasy of eternal life?

i think there are people on this site that were pretty sure by "rational thought processes" that they had the right religion.

    I don't doubt that Finger.

Belief is just that - believing something without facts to back it. We often delude ourselves into thinking we have made a fair analysis because of comfort, false reasoning, etc. Fact is: we all die. Nothing beyond death has ever been proven - hence it just not based on rational thought. It is based on acceptance of an idea without any facts. Once the Wizard of Oz was exposed as a fraud, Dorothy was not going to be fooled any longer.

What we desire is irrelevant. We live in reality whether we like it or not.

"Belief is just that - believing something without facts to back it." What facts do you have about what happens after death?

My Catholic mother raised me under the principle that I shouldn't lie, or accept a lie as truth. And a good Catholic I was at that. That is why I prefer reality over fantasy. If reality is, as it seems to be, that we die and that's it, well, so be it. Fantasy would be useless.

Once upon a time, a woman I met was dying of cancer. She kept saying that she would do many things when she got better. She knew she wouldn't. She was just saying that because she wanted to keep going, be strong, and live her life the best way she could. She died a peaceful death, but she didn't pass away under a delusion. That fantasy I was very much in agreement to tolerate.

Surely the fact that there is the possibility of eternal life, life after death, which cannot be proved false and is therefore part of our "reality" should not be dismissed if it is then it maybe at good cost to us.

    You're confusing reality with speculation.

Sounds like a re-worded version of Pascal's wager.

I'm a big fan of the Atheist's Wager, although I really think it should be called the Agnostic's Wager. (Apologies to those who have seen me pimp this particular quote before.)

You should live your life and try to make the world a better place for your being in it, whether or not you believe in god. If there is no god, you have lost nothing and will be remembered fondly by those you left behind. If there is a benevolent god, he will judge you on your merits and not just on whether or not you believed in him

Oh yeah. Your thread triggered this song.

BIRTH. SCHOOL. WORK. DEATH. by the Godfathers

Pretty plain but I like the beat.

    Posting for future reference.

This is the essence of why you should never argue (too seriously) over religion. It all comes down what happens after you die, from the dead persons perspective! I'll try to let you all know but I have a feeling I will forget, like all the billions who have died before me and were not able to get to a phone.
