I didn't begrudge the single sisters for dressing nice and trying to meet someone to marry at the assemblies/conventions. If they came from a small congregation in a small town how else would they meet someone. Even living in a city with 15 or more congregations meant visiting other congregations. Women in the WTS have a short window of opportunity regarding age and a shortage of single men in the WTS. Lots of competiton for the few single men there were and they were looking for trophy wives not spiritual women.
Ladies- did you treat the assemblies like a fashion show?

Heck yes, and as a dating service, too...

I loved dressing up for assemblies, but I certainly wasn't looking for a husband unless I could find a brother who wore make-up, had long hair and was a bit of a Goth (not very likely).
Yes some people went over the top and some outfits were just not practical or appropriate. June in the UK can range from being baking hot to very cold and wet. I have even known years where I was sat in the stands in a winter coat. So flimsy summer frocks are a bit risky, but many a year have I seen brave young sisters freeze to death in the hope of attracting a mate.
Then there's the shoe issue heels are a must, but stadiums are not designed for them. Heels get caught in rough tarmac and suddenly your shoe gets ripped off while you’re walking, much to everyone’s amusement. Not to mention the concrete steps, ooch!
Sometimes I miss the dressing up, but that's about all I ever do miss.

Transvestitism was looked down on for some reason - I would have looked something like this.....

Fashion show? You're kidding, right? At our assemblies, they were modeling polyester dresses and cheap suits.

When I was younger the assemblies were a great opportunity to dress up. Practicality wasn't the main concern it was all about having an excuse to wear fancy clothes. However I usually spent the assembly afternoons washing out bacon grills and always looked the worse for wear come the end of the day. But I started with high hopes thinking that perhaps I wouldn't be the one dotted with brown fat and smelling like a transport cafe. Managed to attract a brother who liked bacon baps. So let that be a lesson to all young sisters out there.

Guess I'll never forget the convention about 45 years ago. My mother made me a beautiful light pink sleeveless mohair dress with an empire waistline.
All the guys wanted to touch it. hehehe
Boy, did I have fun that day.

When I was single I had my outfits planned out for every day of the convention a month ahead.
It slipped a bit once I was married LOL. Once you have children you tend to spend more time thinking about what they'll wear.
