Moral apologists for the creator will explain away evil by submitting that the potential for evil is a necessary consequence of free will. Wrong!

    Tammy,

Are you suggesting that God, with his infinte knowledge and his existsence outside what we know as "time", has perhaps knowledge about how the universe must be, knowldege that we as mortals with a hard time programming a DVD player, don't have ???

    That's crazy talk !!!

has perhaps knowledge about how the universe must be

Why "must" the universe be any way? Who determined that it must bethis way and no other?

All I know is that, if there is a God he created this and that makes him OK inm y books:

This thread is based on the assumption that each of us is an 'I.' This is an illusion. We are each just a collection of atoms that are recycled throughout the universe. We truly were once star dust and will be again.

Free will means that everything that is possible on earth will be tried. Both great pleasure and terrible suffering. There is nothing that can be done that has not tried. Ultimately, it is not possible to limit the consequences of out exercise of free will to ourselves, we are all in this together and we have no choice - no 'I' to separate from that which is.

Life on earth has fulfilled itself and will continue to until this planet is spent. Then it will repeat on another planet. It may be doing this on many planets right now. Perhaps that is its purpose - if it has a purpose at all. It is the illusionary 'I' that seeks to preserve itself and mould the universe to make sense of its existence. It never will because it is an illusion.

Not that I'm an "apologist", dear GB... and peace to you... but someone like me would say that the "potential" for evil is not a necessary consequence, but merely an unfortunate one.

    Again, peace to you!

Explain the horrible suffering of animals. They are innocent and can't understand why they suffer, get sick and die.

A God who permits this kind of evil on the innocents animal or human has a defect in his character.

    They are innocent

And yet, there are "rogues" in virtually every species on earth, dear BB (peace to you!). No innocence there.

and can't understand why they suffer, get sick and die.

First, you assuming they even "think" about it. Could it be that they simply accept it as their "lot" for now? And most of earthling man doesn't understand why they suffer, get sick and die, either. Doesn't necessarily make them innocent, though...

if there is a God he created this and that makes him OK inm y books...

As a woman and a mother, dear PSacto (peace to you, as well!), I am willing to bet she isn't even 18. You might wanna check into that because folks around here have NO problem "outing"... ummmmm... shall we say... "inappropriate" lusters...

    Again, peace to you both!

Just an added point from what Aguest said- Didn't God give man rule over all the animals on the earth? (Genesis 1:28) Doesn't that make the treatment of animals our responsibility, and their suffering our fault?

Free will could have existed quite nicely with a myriad of options available for these free-will entities to freely choose from, with all of these being equally good.

Describe this Universe in greater detail, please. There are, by the way, a myriad of options currently available.
