Anyone that did reasonably well in algebra (see why they like to keep children up past their bedtimes on test night) could relate to simultaneous equations that forever get closer and closer to crossing, but there is no solution. You put the graphs on paper, and they get closer and closer. Yet, when you work out the equations, there is no root (a root, in algebra, is a point where both equations are simultaneously correct). The simplest of these are Y=1/X and Y=0. The two graphs are close, are forever getting closer, and yet they never reach a root.

The same can be said about Armageddon--which is why I lost any fear of its imminence. Like the pair of simultaneous equations that gets closer and closer without reaching the root, Armageddon is close, getting closer, yet will never reach the present. They can say that for the next million years, and it will in fact be closer. But, it will still be just as long in crossing as it was before. They have in fact been saying that since 1872, and I bet very few active witlesses have even heard of their initial prediction that Armageddon was coming in 1874.

Bingo. I like to ask "when will babylon the great, the harlot, be destroyed? I mean, all the governments, the UN, everyone, has to decide to turn on all false religion, ALL of Christianity, ALL of Islam, ALL Hindus, ALL Buddhists, ALL Hari Krishas.....all of them and every other religion I mentioned has to be outlawed, attacked, destroyed by the governments of the world. There is social inertia that just won't allow that to happen overnight. I mean, in the US alone, at least, The president, the house, the senate would all have to be presuaded to turn on religion that many of them practice, on their friends, to declare marshall law or otherwise change to constitution to outlaw religion....I don't see that happening on a moments notice. The governements in the middle east would have to outlaw themselves, in fact!"

Well put. Long before I came to grips with the truth about my religion, I had a difficult time understanding how all governments were going to suddenly destroy all religions. Witnesses tried to make a big deal out of any perceived governmental hostility to religion--this was easier to do back during the cold war days because of the Communist Bloc. But over the past 20 years, freedom of religion has increased worldwide. This doesn't jibe with JW eschatology at all.

Just take the United States as an example. As a practical matter, in order to be elected to statewide or national office, you must profess a religion--and in almost all states/districts that religion must be some form of Christianity.

So, according to WTS eschatology, society is going to take a 180, going from REQUIRING that their leaders be religious, to BANNING religion. That's so absurd it's almost funny. It puts the JWs in good company with the New World Order conspiracy theorists.

Not to mention the idea that ALL the nations of the earth would band together and unitedly accomplish this. Even one nation holding out, and the prophecy doesn't fit.

So, suddenly and miraculously, for example, Iran will go from a virtual theocracy to an outright ban of Islam in - what - a couple of weeks? And all those militant Muslims in Pakistan and Syria and Afghanistan will happily hand over the keys to the mosque?

Uh huh. Right after the invisible pink unicorn kicks the winning field goal in the Super Bowl.

Every time things get tough or bad, which they will do periodically, they start in again. I was around in the mid to late 70s and between Watergate, the oil embargo and the worst recession in 40 years until now, they were just about to wet their pants they were so thrilled.

You never saw anyone doing the happy dance so fervently over 99% of the human race getting wiped out and it's the same now. I guess this is what happens when you don't have Christmas to get excited over anymore.

When my parents became JW's in the late 1940's they told my parents "at least George will not have to go to school in this old system!"

Well George did go to school but at least "he will never have to work in this old system!"

Well George did get a job but he "didn't need a pension because he will never retire in this old system!"

Well George did retire and he has now got a BUS PASS!

I told my Dad last summer that Mom said I didn't have to go to College because the end was so close. That was back in the late '70s. Well I'm in my 26th year at work and the end hasn't come yet. If I hadn't gone to College I wouldn't have got this job.

We are soo deep in the time of the end that we might as well be living in the mariana trench. were so deep you can taste the blood you can hear the angels lock n load and the birds are licking their lips and the time continues to reduce and the smell of urgency is in the air and the door is squeaking as it shuts. did I forget anything?
