Flipper you have asked about Florida Geography.....

I will attempt as a 20 year resident in the middle of the state to give you my perspective.

I live just outside of Orlando, which means I am about 45 minutes to an hour from any beach I would like to go to on the East Coast. That would include New Smyrna (my favorite), Daytona, Cocoa, etc. I can watch the space shuttle take off from the end of my street. Just the time before last, the skys were dark and clear. It was the most memorable launch I have ever seen. I feel fortunate to have witnessed it. It was breath taking.

When my family really wanted a vacation we headed to the gulf. Fort Myers beach, Sanibel Island, even north of there ...St. Pete and Tampa Bay.

The maximum, we ever drove by car was 4 hours. Can you imagine driving 4 hours and winding up on an exotic beautiful Isle? Well, thats the thrill of living in Florida. We use to leave on a Friday afternoon and be back by Sunday night....feeling as if we had been in a place like Barbados, which we have, only better because it was in the States.

The fresh seafood has always been incredible!

Every day I have Pelicans, Egrets, Storks and Gulls fly over my house, and some stop and land to check out my swimming pool, to name a few out of at least 40 species of birds in high season.

When I was a teenager, my Dad use to pay thousands so that we could vacation on Fort Myer's beach.....here I am with in driving distance.

To think that any of these beaches might be fouled by BP makes me crazy. I have never been to the keys.....but know they are a treasure. I never have to go that far to see beautiful white sand beaches.

I never have to go further than 45 minutes.

    r.

BEKSBKS- In one word : No, it was not worth it for the oil companies to be morally defecient and irresponsible. They cost thousands of people their livelihoods. It's unforgiveable.

JRK- Nice talkin with ya last night bro on the tele ! I'm with ya- if the Everglades and the Keys and the Florida coral reefs get wiped out- I'll not only be sickened- but I'll be calling some government officials and complaining to Congressmen - wanting the oil companies CEO's heads on a silver platter .

RESTRANGLED- Thanks for the layout of the Florida turf. It sounds from what you've described like an absolutely beautiful place on the coastal areas there. And I've heard just great things about the Everglades and Keys. I totally understand your sickened feeling about the prospect of oily beaches and the hideous damage to birdlife and sea animals lives ! If this happened on the California coastline I would be up in arms myself calling Congressmen for sure demanding criminal prosecution ! I feel Haliburton, BP, Ocean whatever - should all be prosecuted criminally for this spill. It's unforgiveable.

If another country came and spilled oil on our shores- the Government would be declaring war on that country in a heartbeat. Same thing should be done to these oil companies involved

A quote from the Sacramento Bee paper today , " Tensions are likely to grow if BP's next effort to stop the spill - a " top kill " , which involves pumping in heavy fluids and is scheduled for Wednesday - does not succeed. That could be followed by another inventively named maneuver, a "junk shot " , which would clog the opening with materials that include golf balls and pieces of tire and rope. Or, more likely, BP would try to attach a new funneling device or lower a new blowout preventer on top of the 450-ton one that failed. "

It continues, " But if those measures prove ineffective, it may be August before the leak is stopped through the completion of a relief well," according to Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen.

WTF ? August ? The southeast coast doesn't HAVE until August to get this well plugged. By that time the oil will be well on it's way traveling up the freaking East Coast ! Ridiculous. And the Environmental protection agency has informed BP it is conducting it's own tests to find less toxic chemical dispersants as the ones BP are using are too toxic.

So basically - everybody's running around like chicken's with their heads off not knowing what to do. There HAS to be SOMEBODY on this planet who can plug this damned oil well. Jesus. Comments welcome. I feel for you Southern state posters. Peace out, Mr. Flipper

You are Ok for now... On the Gulf or Atlantic side? We are looking longer term (maybe a month or two or more before it starts hitting here.) It is still beautiful but probably not for long if they can't plug this leak.

You'll be OK....and congrats by the way!

Reporters threatened with arrest by U.S. Coast Guard under orders from BP

    http://www.naturalnews.com/028863_British_Petroleum_Gulf_of_Mexico.html

(NaturalNews) "The Gulf of Mexico oil catastrophe, now in its 35th day, has struck land, coating tourist beaches, marshes and shorelines with a greasy black filth that metaphorically represents the corporate greed that now dominates the U.S. economy. We are all awash in the dark slime of corporations gone bad, and now we're paying the price for allowing these companies to dominate our media, our government and our entire economy. You might think government regulators could have prevented all this, but that's hardly the case. This disaster isn't merely about a government regulation failure; it's about what happens when you let corporations rule Washington.

British Petroleum has been steamrolling both the federal government and the press over this oil catastrophe in the Gulf. For starters, the U.S. Coast Guard is now threatening to arrest journalists who try to cover the story by invoking "BP rules" that forbid journalists from conducting investigative journalism. (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010...)

As reported by CBS News: "When CBS News tried to reach the beach, covered in oil, a boat of BP contractors with two Coast Guard officers on board told us to turn around under threat of arrest." In other words, the U.S. Coast Guard is now protecting the financial interests of corporations by trying to censor a story the public needs to see........."

This thing is going to stink from so many directions as the story unravels.

Paid off inspectors, lack of supervision, ignored data, shoddy construction, Oil lobbyists on and on.............

Toured a Bicycle factory yesterday, one of the better inventions we humans came up with and still a popular way to get around.
