Remember how careful we were when the prices shot up? How much consumption decreased? We can do this.

A price hike like we saw before with an already hurt economy, I think, is just what we need to push financially strapped people over the edge that aren't already.
America does not seem to be very smart, we have had all kinds of warnings to get off the oil, we won't until we come to a grinding halt and are forced to.

The unfortunate fact is oil drives most modern economies throughout the world, given that shipping, train transportation of commodities,
truck transportation, airline, military forces and automobile use are all connected to oil burning products.
That being said its going to be along time before other energy souses can replace what is already there and in use.
The most easiest to convert over would be the personal use vehicles that are growing in numbers every year,
especially in vastly growing countries like China and India. Its starting to look like electricity is coming to the forefront
for these types of vehicles and I fully support that, less pollution and noise .
I'm looking into purchasing a Chevy Volt right now just to back myself up.

Don't be silly, love. We can't but if every American did, yes. That isn't going to happen.

Meanwhile- back to the topic - I think the powers to be are too invested financially to give alternative energy sources a try. I mean- I've heard the government has tried stopping people from getting hydrogen type energy going in New Mexico. Oil is a huge draw to our modern society. I heard a program on Coast to Coast talk show once that Rockefeller was the one who pressured Henry Ford to not make cars powered by alcohol . Initially it would be cheaper, more economical- but Rockefeller somehow threatened and heavy handed Ford into capitulating to run cars on gasoline.
You look at the history of this country- and there are always powers who are trying to control and manipulate trends for their own greedy purposes. Case in point are the companies arguing right now in front of the senate. And why did we go to war in Iraq ? Everybody knows- oil

Dinah, I'm just saying, consumption did go down, they felt it for a minute. I just wish we could have some power over them (the oil companies).
My husband takes the train to work every day. This country should have been focusing on public transport and fuel efficiency for the last 30 years, but that wasn't in the best interests of the OIL MEN.

Please drive less all you Beksbks of the world. Please buy little tiny unsafe cars. Please cramp your lifestyle to burn less fuel.
Turn it into a religion! Feel all smug and superior as you drive past me in your Holy Toyota Pious. You'be earned it! Indulgences from the Goracle.
You will help keep the oil prices down.
For me.
Oh and the Chinese too. And the Indians. And everyone else that buys oil--which is everybody. You guys forget. Oil is a global market.

Well, I got a question,
Does the planet have an unlimited supply of oil?
How long can the planet sustain the lifestyles we have started?
Without pollution, price etc etc factored in, shouldn't we be thinking
about conservation based on the fact that as each day passes
oil is more valuable than the day before?
