Love the movie. Love the metaphorical discussion.
When I watched it the last time, I very much related to Andy. Especially the part about climbing through tons of shit to get freedom.

I don't really see the connection between the movie and JWs.
"Or am I being obtuse?"

Think About It
I think the scene where Andy locks himself in the room and plays the opera recording over the loudspeakers could mean freedom of thought, independent thinking or the idea of doing normal life activites that are contrary to the rules of the WTS. The breaking into the room by the guards is the WTS & elder arrangement trying to suppress & punish such freedom of expression.

Heaven
This is one of my all time fave movies. All of your analogies are so spot on!
I pointed out to one of my colleagues not long ago that there are a lot of parallels between that movie and our work place. He laughed out loud which surprised me as he does not often do that.

I have used that phrase many times in these last few years I was allowing the hurt and stress to overcome me and it harmed me mentally as well as physically. I had to start whispering that phrase over and over again.."get busy livin, or get busy dying" I'm choosing to Get busy livin..even though it's not easy..Baby steps (what about bob).
Great movie and awesome thread!! Thanks.

Great movie, and it lost the Academy Award to....Forrest Gump. I liked Forrest Gump, but Shawshank was better. So was Pulp Fiction, for that matter, which was also nominated for best picture that year.

"Shawshank" definitely mirrors real life when it comes to JWs. So does "The Truman Show". And watching the show "V" has really struck me on a deeper level lately as well.
