"That's what the Jews said about christ, is it not? Was he not executed as a common criminal?"

This is what makes that not comparable- "John Doe lay on his cot and relived the memory of that night 10 years ago that had forever changed his world, his outlook, his raison d'etre."

"Why had he gone along with Jimmy Joe when he knew that there was no chance of their pulling it off? True, they had done a number of hits before and had gotten away without even a description from their terrified victims,"

John Doe was convicted, and acknowledged his guilt. Therefore his execution was justified. Christ was guilty of nothing.

A set of railroad tracks run on each side of the train path. Though they are parallel, they are not the same. Why don't we let Sylvia tell us if there is an intentionall parallel in the story to Christ. I'll bet a dollar to a nickle there is.

The "V" sign is the first two fingers of the hand, formed in a "V" for "Victory" sign that Winston Churchill first used during WWII to symbolize the indomitable spirit of the English people, determined to withstand the German "Blitzkrieg" and fight back, to refuse to be conquered by the Nazi war machine...

Since then it's used in any situation where a person has overcome an obstacle successfully...

Your comment, "John Doe was convicted, and acknowledged his guilt. Therefore his execution was justified. Christ was guilty of nothing...."

Shows that you still don't understand...

This is a work of FICTION - any resemblance to persons living or dead is STRICTLY COINCIDENTAL!!!

NO symbolism about "Jesus Christ" exists - at least, not in the mind of the writer!!!

Some years ago, when Mark Twain had reached the pinnacle of his writing success, he made the comment [and I'm paraphrasing here...]

"If any scholar or putz of a critic ever tries to find a 'hidden meaning' in any of my stories, I will take after him with a six-shooter...!!"

And that just about sums up my opinion of people who try to read special, hidden symbolism into other peoples' writing...

And this website just about says it all... http://www.johntreed.com/HTWPsymbolism.html

Like it or not, symbolism is a huge component of good writing.

    Hah!!! FOUND IT!!!

Here's a quote from the introduction to "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain: "PERSONS attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot."

And that is from this website: http://classiclit.about.com/library/bl-etexts/mtwain/bl-mtwain-huck-note.htm

    Soooooo......

"Persons attempting to find a pseudo-spiritual or pseudo-quasi-religious secondary or symbolic meaning in this [Sylvia's...] work of FICTION will be handed over to Ziddina to be tickled with a damp Ostrich feather until milk comes out of their nose..."

    Zid the she-devil... troll she-devil

    Waitasec, John Doe...

Isn't there a difference between being facetious, humorous sarcasm, and that oblique fog of pseudo-symbolism that literary scholars tend to disappear into???

Zid - still of the she-devil variety - and I'm NOT speaking symbolically...

No I understand it being a work of fiction. Just because something is a work of fiction does not mean that there cannot be parallels, symbolism, etc. Also the "strictly coincidental" label was not on this particular tale. I also must agree with John Doe- the poster, about good writing often having symbolism. I've read alot of fiction that made me think beyond the actual words on the paper. Some works do have deeper meaning/layers.
