TD, I've never come across an unbelieving mate that knows all of this stuff, so to me your head-knowledge is mysterious. Giving you the benefit of the doubt, the Bible is a unique book, but any organization's flawless analysis of the Bible doesn't make them ordained by God, nor does such an analysis prove that God exists. What Jehovah's Witnesses teach as to the grand theme of the Bible is unique, has a universal appeal and makes perfect sense to honest hearted individuals, but convincing evidence for God doesn't come strictly from something written in a book or by studying nature for evidence of intelligent design. This provides a starting point, but evidence for God comes directly from God himself, not from indirect sources: a book or evidence acquired in the natural world.

Well done - an argument of perfect circularity

Not everyone who studies the WT becomes a believer, any more than everyone who studies Mormonism becomes a Mormon. New Zealand's leading theologian, 89 year old, Sir Lloyd George Geering, ONZ, GNZM, CBE, Doctor of Divinity, Emeritus Professor of Religious Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, is an athiest. All that studying didn't convince him that a supernatural being created or looks after the earth.

The mistake people make, is studying a groups teachings 'as truth' before doing due diligence and studying it for truthfulness.

If all people did that, would there be any Mormons, Moonies, Branch Davidians, etc.?

Take TD's test and be honest with yourself when you do it.

    Cheers

    Chris

    This thread is a classic!

Alice, im gonna copy and paste something TD wrote earlier:

There's nothing wrong with the fact that the significance attached to the years 1799, 1878, 1874 was eventually discarded. I have been very clear about that, making statements to that effect twice on this thread.

However in view of the fact that those dates were once taught, there are certain things that obviously cannot be said today about the Bible Students prior to 1914:

It cannot be said that they pointed forward to 1914 as the date for Christ's invisible return.

It cannot be said that they pointed forward to 1914 as the date for the heavenly birth of God's kindgdom

It cannot be said that they preached the good news of that heavenly established kingdom at or before 1914.

It cannot be said that they pointed forward to 1914 as the date for Christ to receive kingly power

It cannot be said that they pointed forward to 1914 as the beginning of the "Time of the end."

How do you stand with respect to those statements? Are they true or not? Why do you keep being so afraid of telling your actual oppinion and change the subject all the time, is that really how one should look for the truth? Its not like telling your oppinion and answering these questions truthfully will make you less christian..

a side note - i really hope people will stop making personal comments to Alice. We all know noone will gain anything from that angle.

On the very first page of this thread Sir82 said the following:

    You forgot choice (D):
"The light has gotten brighter. The quote from the later source clarifies (or in some cases corrects) the earlier viewpoint."
All the JWs I know would then pick choice D.

Then on page 2 after reading several posts from Alice as she tried to defend the quotes, I joked:

Damn Alice...It's a multiple choice test. If you can't figure out the answer...pick C

    To which she replied:

    I pick D.
    ...
    D. The information is out of context and there is no contradiction between the two quotes.

While it's not the exact wordage that Sir came up with, she fulfilled what he predicted would happen: defend the WTS despite the evidence otherwise.

Nothing in Alice's cut-and-pasted comments changes (or really even relates to) the fact that the WTS claims that prior to 1914, they pointed forward to 1914 as the time for the second coming. In actuality, prior to 1914, they DID NOT point forward to 1914 as the time for the second coming; they claimed it had already happened, in 1874.

This is a blatant lie made by the Watchtower Society. Alice knows it and she's playing the misdirection card...

    Alice..

    TD has something most Jehovah`s Witness`s don`t..

    An education..

Trying to baffle him with bullshit,or WBT$ cut and paste..

    Won`t win a debate..

You actually going to have to know what your talking about..

Your "easy meat" for almost anyone on this board..With less education than TD..

What chance do you possibly have with someone like TD?..

    None..

Are you going to show me the scriptures that say.."Millions now living will never die"..?

You said they were numerous..And..Posted scriptures that said no such thing..

    You have`nt showed me 1..

Personal interpretations of the Bible are not acceptable..

Alice, yoohoo! Please show a pre-1914 quote that shows that the WTS predicted that Jesus would come back invisibly in 1914. Still waiting.
