Good question. That's what most Calvinists do. But, most churches aren't true Calvinists.
Most Calvinists will tell you they preach about Hell and Salvation (the Gospel) because the bible tells them to, then let the cookies crumble.

This is also what I have observed. In fact, one of the local Presbyterian churches has the word, "Evangelical" on their sign. [LWT scratches his head.]

Anyway, earlier on this thread or another one, cattails mentions the violence of John Calvin. Wasn't he merely imitating his Heavenly father? Nothing that John Calvin did even comes close to the violence that God himself will inflict upon billions of men, women and children.

I have a biographical book on Servetus, he was a unitarian. He was also a genius, trying to find a way to bring Christians, Jews, and Muslims together.

He felt the doctrine of the trinity was the main schism between the three.

    I am not a unitarian.

However, what was done to him in Geneva by Calvin and his people is reprehensible.

He would have probably suffered the same fate in Catholic Spain, his native country. His non-latinized name is Miguel Serveto.

He never recanted his belief, and went to the fire calling on Jesus to help him.

    Freedom of conscience!

    LWT,

John Calvin was imitating the heiarchial Catholic Church in causing death. Death reigns because of sin. God does not cause sin or death, he causes life. It makes no difference if God wills a person's death sooner rather than later. He is ultimate judge, and all deserve death under sin.

Let's take a lesson from Perry, if there is evil, there is the Catholic Church to blame!

Yet it was hierarchical political Christianity that produced this.

Which is a beautiful translation, by the way.

    BTS,

Thousands of biblical manuscripts were in the hands of congregational christians and were believed upon for centuries without any connection to the catholic church or the reformers.

It is those manuscripts that forms the basis of the KJB.

What violence? There is two sides to the story (as usual).

He didn't Murder Servetus. He prosecuted him under the law at the time.

Why are you making this about Calvin? Even if he was the most evil man in the world, the Servetus case had nothing to do with predestination. Calvin did not invent Soverign Grace, nor was he the first one to teach it. Why isn't anyone going after Augustine?

Seems like only the "chores" in the Greek Christian scriptures apply to the Great Crowd. I don't understand why the preaching work isn't the sole work of the anointed. Jesus was speaking only to his disciples when he gave them that command. According to the way the Watchtower interprets the Greek scriptures, preaching should only be done by those partaking.

Well... Trent did make things difficult for those who wanted to reform the church from within.

    DD:

    What violence?

YHWH is a manly God of War. Calvin wanted to carry out 'justice'. They are not so different.

The Catholic Church co-opted interpretation with their Majesterium doctrine along with "tradition."

Jehovah's Witnessses have adopted Catholic structure because it has proved to be durable over the millennia.

JW's deny most members the Mass (emblems) already. So, why not deny them the scriptures?

Let's face it, neither the Catholic nor the Protestant approach leads to anything beneficial except for the placebo effect of being on the side of the "Truth."

It all comes down to "Mother may I?"
