    Personally, I'm not atheist.

Interesting so your deity in self description is nothing......not trying to be smug ?

Its easy to understand that the evolution of the gods is balanced with the evolution of man's own ignorance of himself and the world we live in.

A small part of this evolution was the murder of Jesus Christ and the following belief in him as a living demi-god.

I'll say one thing about you Terry, you do have a pertensity to look at things from all angles with open minded depth and magnifications.

I also like the way you crack and fracture the status quo of ancient theology into something new described todate as Terrytheology.

Which is good by the way for it stimulates people to think about what they have been thinking about in a reevaluating way.

Sorry to interrupt, but something being "unfathomable, detached and imperious, indifferent and nothing man could relate to in any way" doesn't make it "nothing". The same could be said about the weird quantum universe within which we - to borrow a phrase - "live and move and exist" (Acts 17:28) and yet it's very definitely there, in fact, it's what we are. It's not nothing, and neither would a God be who had the attributes Terry mentions. It just wouldn't be the God humans generally imagine - but then, we are pretty limited.

The problem with Faith is that we stop LOOKING at what it really is we BELIEVE.

We cannot see what we hold to be "True".

Once we have accepted something we can no longer step back and actually look at it any longer.

I have a very hard time getting distance from certain things all too familiar to me. I have to try various avenues of approach and find the most PRACTICAL avenue to see things with new eyes.

Married people don't see or hear each other any more.

Why? They think they already know.

It isn't so much that we have been swimming in the ocean of "god" so long we don't even know we are in the water----it is that we don't question the idea that we may not have gills at all!!

The way the human mind assimilates and tries to understand things LARGER than itself it to take bite-sized chunks and consider them accurate samples of the WHOLE.

This SYNECHDOCHE can be quite illusory if we happened to bite the wrong piece first!

I like to use this thought experiment:

A professor walks into a classroom with a large black vase. He sets it on his desktop. He faces the student body and says:

"As soon as you are certain you know what is in this vase hold up your hand."

The professor then removes a large white marble....then another....then another...then another...

Hands begin going up one by one until a majority are aloft.

The Professor reaches in and pulls out a black marble!

    Hands go down.

Another black marble......another.....another.....a WHITE marble......a black marble.....

    Hand start going up again.......

A majority of hands eventually are aloft.

The Professor reaches in a pulls out a potato chip!!

The hands drop and laughter resounds.....

    etc. etc.

    What is the point?

We are pattern-seeking thinkers who form impulsive conclusions of predictability. But, this is not always entirely accurate when an extremely complex and unpredictible set of identities is presented to us!

    So too with "god."

Our human definition of what GOD is---could be quite laughable!

We start out by making it a HIM and then we become "his image" and concern! Pretty soon old myths start representing some elaborate and ultra-profound story of our rescue from death and portal to eternal paradise!

    How laughable!

    I say: NUTS!

Well then, Tammy---here is a mother who Jehovah would really approve of:

Terry, I gave an example of a mother because you used an example of a mother. But what you posted after this makes no sense at all. I don't even know how to respond.

Personally, I'm not atheist. I think that whoever or whatever "god" is---is completely unfathomable, detached and imperious, indifferent and nothing man could relate to in any way.

Meaning you do believe in the supernatural after all- just in your own way?

    Oh Tammy--come on!

God is a "parent" who destroys his own children! Have you forgotten Noah's day? What is THAT all about? You are so narrowly focused on rescuing the loving god from the entire picture painted in the Bible of a malevolent, volatile, murderous, tyrannical, sometimes pussycat, luvvy-wuvvy God that you don't get the ENTIRE portrait in frame. God can't be just what you want Him to be. There are wives who have husbands that beat the crap out of them and then say, "Oh...it was my fault..." This is sad, pathetic and maddening. But, selective victim-related behavior. Not acknowledging the EVIL of a "loving" God is just not honest!

On the contrary. My conception of God is natural and NOT supernatural. He/She/It ispart of the Universe and not above or beyond it.

If I were to hazard a guess I'd say this. (Hang on tight...)

God is a parasite that lives in our consciousness and cannot afford to destroy ALL of us because the "host" would die and deity would cease to assume Godness (i.e. superiority/dominance/reverence)

Now, aren't you sorry you asked?

    Terrys a hoopy frood.

But he's too "I know the TRUTH" about it all. He needs to be more slick. Toke up and chillax my fine friend. Go get some strange pootenany and party on down.

Im agnostishish, but these threads read like a Randtower Darwin and Trackt Society

It's like, I am partying down here, in the Golden Calf nightclub, and this Terry comes down from his mountain with a bunch of cops and spoils the party.

It's all right. You'll be pushing up daisies regardless, so have some fun while you can.

Thanks for the stimulating and sober advice. Your acumen and perspicacity have seen through me at last! I am chastened.

    Sigh....

God can be just what Jesus showed Him to be. I am a Christian. To me, this means that I follow Christ - his teaching and his example, and hopefully, his voice. He is the truth, to me. And through his teachings, I read the bible. If something does not mesh with the things and love and mercy that Jesus showed us, then there is something wrong with that something, and not with God - or I simply do not understand it properly. (nothing wrong with still searching to understand things, I think you'll agree) So I'm not picking and choosing. I'm simply following Christ.

Terry, if you think I'm not looking objectively at the whole picture - then I hope you realize that neither are you.

Now, aren't you sorry you asked?

    ;)

    But no.
