Kindly cease all hostilities. This is about Avatar.

Avatar is yet more proof that just because something is popular doesn't mean its any good.

Went and saw it, tried to keep an open mind, but I just could not make myself like something so contrived and preachy. The gaping plot holes didn't help.

AK-Jeff: pondering the "cerebral undertones" of this movie only make me hate it more. Basic message: military is evil, corporations are evil, mining is evil. Living in the jungle is somehow better. noble savages are powerless until brave white man shows up to lead them to victory!

I wanted to see it in theaters, but the cost of seeing a movie just one time is a put off for me. I bought the DVD/BluRay when it came out a few months ago.

I love this movie. It describes our Empire culture very well and what it has done to indigenous people and environments around the world. Certainly First Nations people come to mind for residents of North America, but displacement and oppression have had a long history in the Old World as well. Those who benefit greatly from their favored position in Empire culture may not find the themes to their liking. Corporate land grabs are happening right now.

I thought the effects were amazing. We've come a long way since Tron.

Ohh I agree Dave!! One of my indicators of a good movie, is if I think about it in the following hours/days. I definitely did. And it certainly was pretty.

The flora and fauna are incredible. JC waited, so I read, for the technology to catch up to his vision.

Agreed CC - the flora and fauna were the keynotes to the talent displayed by this production.

As for plagiarizing of the DWW script, I have no idea. Never saw the movie. And I was not there when JC allegedly stole the script - WOW - wish I was - it would be worth millions!!!

I have no problem with opinions that express that, if they are done tastefully - My "cold bucket of water" statement had to do with the insistent and insulting way in which it was being done, with an unkind attack on another poster. I know that happens too - but that is the reason for the comment in explanation.

I am sure there were detractors to The Wizard Of Oz, Star Wars, and other flicks that lead the way technologically. Those films stood the test of those critics, and the test of time. Avatar will perhaps do the same with time. Or not. But why be a killjoy?

    I agree wholeheartedly Jeff.

It has got me thinking. How many times have you walked out of a movie that you paid for? I mean I have sat through some real stinkers in my time, but I have never walked out of one. Save once. I was about 16, and my mother, aunt, and cousin, also 16 went to see "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". Three of us were enjoying it, but my aunt, a very very self righteous JW decided we must leave! Pornographic language!!

Me too - only once Beks.

It was the occasion of my very first 'date' with my wife - 37 years ago now - a damned JW style date. We went to a movie with my MIL - and she disliked the 'un-christian' theme and forced all to walk out.

That was the first and only time I ever did so.

Hehe Well Jeff, over the day, I've thought about it and there was one other time.

My boyfriend soon to be first husband and I went to see Last Tango in Paris. This was very shortly after I left home and the dubs. I can't remember if we walked out because I felt uncomfortable (which I DID), or because we wanted to get home as quickly as possible!
