I've noticed a peculiar human trait lately....

Gregor, I don't even know if my view is right, let alone morally superior, and I certainly don't think I'm morally superior. I was merely being honest when I said I didn't think I was capable of using lethal force (and the conversation had to do with being attacked, not being murdered). But I've never been in such a situation, so I can't say anything with absolute authority.

You also misquoted me, or perhaps I misunderstood you. You said the key to human success was the pursuit of self interest - if you think that is interchangeable with the human instinct to survive, then I did not understand this.

And I am glad that there are people who set aside self interest, to see to the needs of others, and not for personal gain. Such people do exist.

A friend once told me regarding rights, " you have no rights and nothing is fair" . That may be a bit tough but it's close .

2 Pots of Regular Terry, just keep the buzzed customers, the de-caffers aren't worth it

    Lately?

    It's been that way forever.

I suggest a coffee drive; have people drop off unwanted or unused coffee.

    Animals are that way too.

My uncle had these ponies and you could give them some treats and they'd be happy, but if you ran out, they'd get mad at you and start snuffling your pockets and bumping you.

    Ingrates!

I would have to assume that the reason your store started serving coffee in the first place, was customer service. Something to give your store a leg up in the bookstore market. Likely the cost of the coffee was deemed reasonable in comparison to the positive effect on shopping habits. The customer is doing you a favor by patronizing your store as opposed to another. Full circle. You brought people in to your business, and they expect you to continue the same level of service that brought them in. The market at work.

I'd start charging for the coffee. $1 a cup should start covering the cost to support it. $12 a pot (average size home coffee maker) is more than enough to cover the coffee, water, electricity used.

You don't say how this coffee is served. Does a customer ask an employee for a coffee or is the coffee set out for self service? Another question, Does the volume of cups of coffee being served seem to match the customer volume or are there individual customers who are tanking up, cup after cup?

Sounds like a nice promotional thing to do but I think there is a lack of a control plan by the store.

I would ask for a donation for the coffee then give the money to a local charity, tell the customers that is what it's for.
