Wasblind, prior to 1974 it was a total, extreme shunning...from 74 to 81 it was lightened. You were encouraged to say 'hello' (nothing more) to Dfed ones who were attending meetings and attempting to come back and the Df rule was pretty much disregarded so far as family members- so long as spiritual things were not discussed. When Ray Franz left the GB in 1980 the org then tightened the reins and went even further. Now they returned to the pre-74 stance with one addtion. Previously a person who voluntarily disassociated themself was not treated as a Dfed person, just as a person of the 'world'. Now, they were to be fully shunned, just as any Dfed person. And family relations were now reduced to necessary family business again...whereas socializing was allowed 74-81 with family members.

I don't see how this is a change. It seems to me that they're saying what they've always said. "Necessary family business" only, but don't get extreme, and reiterating the point that the goal of the Dub, even during necessary family business, is to make the DFd person feel less loved than he/she would if he re-joined the Borg collective.
How is this lightening at all?

You know something, you guys are right, I read the context of this completely wrong!!! I looked at the extreme as not to take shunning to the extreme, when its actually the opposite. So they're saying if its necessary to take care of family business, so be it. However, not to associate with DFd or DAd family more than absolutely necessary. They kill me with the "incentive" part. Its nothing short of emotional extortion, and the estrangement of what would be formerly close relatives. Its dispicable.

Even still, this "rule" is very unevenly enforced. I know some congregations where you can serve as a MS while hanging out regularly with your DFd kids, and there are others where you're threatened with DFing yourself for the same thing.
The good thing in all of this is that the Borg fears us. That's about the only good thing, but it is something we can use.
