In the old days, they could point at "this generation", "1914", "King of the North", "cry of peace and security", and plenty of funky Bible interpretation to keep the sheeples wetting their pants in excitement of the end being very near. Since all of that has fallen apart, they now say, "the end is near because the faithful slave and its Governing Body say that it is." It's the only nail left that they have to hang their hat on.

That's a major source of the insanity within the religion, in my opinion... In fact, that belief that one is "special", and "above" the rules applied to 'normal' humans, is a fundamental reason that cults become so bizarre and dstructive, IMO...
I am not sure. The Governing Body doesn't write the magazines. I'm not even sure how deeply they read them before giving the rubber stamp. It seems more to me as if some time in the last few years the GB may have circulated a memo through the Writing Committee asking them to increase the "timely reminders" about obedience and submission and ever since then the writers have been engaging in a contest of who can be the biggest GB ass-kisser.
There have been a few GB openings in recent years that have been filled by lifelong ass-kissers and it is almost certain that there are a couple dozen more in Bethel who think they have a shot at the next available spot on the body. Jaracz died this year and Barber (or is it Barr? I always confuse the two) is on his last legs (is he even on his legs at all?).
