Jack- give the Students time they will. This probably needs a seperate thread unless you think the indebted students need annihilation

That's a good one Designs.
But I got a book you should read.
It's called ...the Bible.
Never forget the golden calf. :^)

Well, one thing about the Bible, it sure tells it like it is....not at all like our modern history books. :)

How does anyone square up "Annihilation" with:
Luk 12:4
"I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do. 5"But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him!
If simple physical death is the worse thing that can happen?

Your need to believe in afterlife punishment says something about you.
S
That sword swings both ways.
I believe it says I deserve hell.

The Jewish Sage Rabbi Ben Azzai said of hell and the concepts of justice and judgement in the Talmud
'What is th reward of a good deed? The good deed. What is the punishment of a sin? The sin.'
The evolving and forward thinking of the Jewish schools is shown in Zechariah 13:9 where the rehabilitation of humans was considered 'I will lead them into the fire and refine them like silver.' They could now enter Paradise. With the school of Hillel, who Jesus quotes, 'Gehinnom will cease' which meant that the Paradise and Gehinnom exist in man by man alone. ie 'The Kingdom of God is within'.

Vander,
I didn't say anything about torture or shock treatments.
I said "conscious punishment after death."
Life imprisonment for murder involves conscious punishment even though no physical torture is applied.
The murderer is locked up for life in an unpleasant place.
What is wrong with similar conscious punishment after death for those who escaped justice in this life?
Satanas and Think About It,
<< Ding, Your need to believe in afterlife punishment says something about you. >>
Isn't this an ad hominem argument rather than a reasoned response to the point I am making?
Surely in this life justice requires punishment for child molesters, rapists, mass murderers, and so on.
We don't say, "Jesus taught mercy, love, and forgiveness, so your 'need' to punish child molesters, rapists, murderers, and mass murders says something negative about you."
But we all know that many people in this life escape any semblance of justice.
They don't get caught, and many who do get caught get a slap on the wrist or escape justice altogether.
So why is the thought of God providing justice after death so offensive to you?
The same Jesus who preached mercy, love, and forgiveness also said of the Pharisees: "They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such men will be punished most severely." (Luke 20:47)
"Jesus, this need you have to see these Pharisees `punished most severely' says something about you."

DD......it's easy to square it up with annihilation when you compare it to what Matt 10:28 says.
New International Version(©1984)
Matt 10:28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.DESTROY = ANNIHILATION
