I just dont get why this is the big issue to anyone but the most rabid feminist. Ofcourse God dont condone rape, he clearly state that the woman should be put to death if she is engaged to be married, and even if she is not, the father should be paid 50 shekels!

The other women was not jews so they had it coming! God has allways been very clear on that issue, non-jews deserved whatever they got prior to christ.

And dont forget, God had a very hard week prior to making these laws!

Blondie: Perhaps Lot was thinking: "Hmmm. We were having such a good time giving footbaths to each other, and I sure could use 100 shekels..."

What about the scripture in zephaniah where god said he will gather the nations against israel and its women will be raped/ravished? That scripture at the very least gives tacit approval for the action.

    What passage is that?

Another thing, was it rape or a property issue. Note these 3 situations in the bible.

    Deuteronomy 22:22-29 (New International Version)

22 If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel.

23 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, 24 you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you.

25 But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. 26 Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor, 27 for the man found the young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed, there was no one to rescue her.

28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels [a] of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

Hey! Rape was not a property issue! A loving God would never allow such a thing!

No, God see and understand that when a woman is raped, she is very sad, often for days. So to cheer her up, he has a loving arrangement where the dad resieve some money - since the dad is happy, she will soon forget her discomfort.

    It all makes perfect sence.

How come as Witnesses reading the Bible every day we don't realize this?!?! And how can people quit the WT and find out all of this and STILL believe in the Bible? The God of the Bible really is confusing.....

ele_lux, you be shocked how many jws know this and have asked elders for an answer. The WTS gives circular answers. Notice how often they quote Deut. 7:3,4 which refers only to Canaanites...then rarely mentions Deut. 21:10-14.

Therefore rape didn't mean the same thing then as it does to us now.

sab, I would qualify your statement by saying it didn't mean the same thing to the men as it does to now.

I think it means exactly the same thing to the women of today.

Hmm, I am not sure I agree. Women were HIGHLY oppressed in those days. I would venture to guess they actually believed they were lower then men that they WERE actually property, therefore they probably didn't even realize it was abusive.

I'm sure they felt like sh*t all the time and didn't know why though.

Am I glad to live in a day where women have rights. I would have been killed in that time for trying to defend a women lol.
