No one is twisting anything, I for one do NOT view Genesis as "literal" so it doesn't matter what was said literally, it is simple a story of Man's creation and Man's fall from grace ( at least the parts we are talking about right now).
It's wording is "poetic" and "artistic", not literal.
To be honest, I don't know of any biblical scholar that view that passage as meaning that God said they would time the instant they ate the food.
Oh if only Adam had been Samuel L. Jackson.....
