As far as I know, no one was forced to purchase Enron stock either.

Did that absolve the insiders who cooked the books?

    I agree with Palimpset's viewpoint...

There are many different, common 'definitions' of "mind control" in existence. Here in the U.S., those of us who are older can vaguely remember the 1950's war between North and South Korea - largely over the ideological differences between "democracy" and communism... Or at least remember the 'fallout' from that war...

During the Korean war, the North Koreans placed captured American soldiers into internment camps - "re-education centers" - where they were subjected to severe deprivations and torture, beatings, and slow starvation, in order to force them to "confess" to bizarre and unlikely "war crimes" supposedly committed by American troops at the direction of the American generals and Presidents Truman and Eisenhower.

The "communist witch hunts" exemplified by the actions spearheaded by Senator McCarthy, were, in part, a frightened response to the threat of Communist aggression, and the apparent effectiveness of such "brainwashing" upon captured American soldiers...

I won't even attempt to cover the full complexity of the situation, but that period in American history left an indelible mark in most peoples' minds, that continues to this day. Even amongst people born LONG after the Korean war ended, the term "mind control" tends to bring up images of extreme means - torture, drugs, being indocrinated against one's will - in most peoples' minds. Such is the effect of cultural memory - if I've used the correct term, there.

On the other hand, I do agree that the term "social control" and its accompanying definition, as Palimpset described it, fits the method of control that most cults/sects/social groups use - and a more complete description of both the definition of "social control" and an in-depth description of its 'mechanism', would be greatly appreciated...

"Are WE discouraged because Armageddy has not come as soon as WE expected?"

(Actually: " Are you discouraged because Armageddon has not come as soon as WE told you?")

I did, I chose to go with my mom to the meetings since she was BREASTFEEDING ME and I couldnt walk. Then when I was 5 I chose to believe everything they told me since they were my PARENTS and they were still FEEDING me and they loved me. Is not liked the strapped me to a chair and FORCED their beliefs in my head.
