So an 8 year old is killed by a machine-gun and it's no ones fault?

I say it's the father's fault, 100%. If you're too stupid to understand "machine guns are powerful and dangerous", and that they are not a recommended toy for an 8 year old to take hold of..

You are simply too stupid to be allowed to care for children. What did the father think he was handing his child, a water gun?

The kid died because his dad was stupid.

"Hey Kids!! Let's go spend the day playing with devices specifically designed for killing humans!!"

just like smoking, I never saw the purpose of owning a gun.

Simon, do you want to get me started on bashing the police? ask Beks and Sammie.... I hate them

I can think of a few, such as "because there are people in the world who don't see a purpose in 'freedom of speech' and/or 'freedom of religion'".

For me personally though, I'm thinking that if the zombies don't rise up soon - certainly the robots will.

I think sometimes cases like this are used to bring in a commercial agenda---just like the gun insurance you mentioned, Simon. Instead of the guilty person (s) being punished, the whole of society will $pay$ for it in some way.

For no one to be held accountable for this is a miscarriage of justice and the judge should be sued through the Judges Association and removed from the bench and his portrait hung in a Hall of Shame.

The boys father should be sterilized so he doesn't have any more kids because he is too stupid and uncaring to deserve children. He should also be removed from the home and sent to parenting classes for a few years.

The man who demanded the father to sign the waiver---(a police chief, no less! who should have known better!) should have his hands cut off for presenting the paper and for loading and handing the gun over. He has no morals at all to use a tricky worded paper to absolve himself of responsibility. He should also spend some time in prison for his deed. Or better yet, let the next kid use him as a target since he seems to think this is innocent fun to promote shooting uzi's to 8 year old children.

And the jurors who allowed all to go scott free with no accountability should all be Baker Acted and have their heads examined.

So, you don't think the obvious solution applies ... don't allow open access to machine guns?

The "right to bear arms" was written when people had muskets. Not automatic assault rifles.

I think the insurance angle is the way to go - it sidesteps the banning issue and uses economic forces to enact change. Make it too expensive to own a dangerous weapon or make people accept the responsibility (because many are otherwise not responsible themselves).

An obvious thing is an age requirement. They have it for driving a car. There should be one for when you can shoot a gun.

Simon, I do agree that there should not be "open access" to machine guns. Also I don't think children or anyone under 21 should be allowed in to even observe gun shows.

I do not agree with the insurance angle. This "system of things" that we are living in is all based in commercialism and economic forces. If it were ideal it would be based on morality and personal responsibility. As it is, this system is all about using money as the carrot for both reward and punishment.

All insurance companies are crooked in my opinion. Using the gun issue is just another way to generate more revenue for them and really does not ever solve the problem of moral responsibility because that would take education.

Is it right that only those with enough money to pay the insurance fees should own guns? This does not take into consideration how one makes their money, only that they have what it takes to pay off gov. requirements. Is it right that those who have acquired plenty of money through deceitful business practices should own guns because they can afford the tarriff but the lowly ditchdigger cannot?

I'm American. I hate guns. America is too big. Too complex. It's a sad shadow of its former self. Not the country I grew up in at all. I mourn for our USA.

Although Simon resides in Canada, I just wanted to assure everyone that 99 percent of Canadians don't really care about what happens down there. ;) We are more attuned to China nowadays, our new big trading partner. GO CHINA! :D
