WOW! Strength to those coping. Batten down.
Looks incredibly frightening to be anywhere near this . Do what you can to keep safe.
Looks like many houses have been destroyed but there is no loss of life up to now.
At least 3 babies were born during the cyclone, one of them in an evacuation centre (a little girl). Luckily a midwife on holidays from England was on hand to deliver the baby.
Most of my favorite spots got off lightly and I have heard that some elderly Dubs in Cairns, that I knew in my youth, are OK.
I still wish I'd bought that beach house, as it would have gotten off lightly..... again. I didn't know I didn't have to wait on Jehovah to have a piece of Paradise.
Black Sheep, I've never been to Queensland (except Birdsville) but I do believe the coastal areas are very beautiful - normally. At the moment I think South Australia is the most attractive part of the country.
Those guys in Nth QLD have mucho cohones!
Australia is a country of massive extremes. Decade long droughts, snow in the middle of Summer ( Hobart), floods that defy imagination. Aus is the same size as mainland U.S. Early last year I flew across it, red desert for 5 hrs. Oct last year flew across and it was green for 5 hrs with huge temporary rivers. Rain forest in the north, windswept cliffs and bays to the south, hammered by Antarctic storms. Bushfires and cyclones are part of this country. As an old aboriginal man once said to me, "This country can kill you".
but I do believe the coastal areas are very beautiful
When I was in Oz I got lots of comments on how green the Ozzies thought NZ was.
When I got back to NZ, I couldn't believe how brown NZ was.
I love the tropical monsoon climate of Nth Qld. Many of my favourite places on the planet are in north Qld. I would just buy in a safe place.
I chose where I am in NZ because it has a climate and catchment area not too dissimilar to that of Babinda and Tully. They have incredibly high rainfall, but the small catchment area means that floods are rare and and brief. Build a solid house well out of the flood zones and you shouldn't have any problems. In hindsight, after the last three cyclones to hit the area, I realise that the beach where I should have bought is safe unless the eye of a cyclone hits a very small target area. I would have had to climb a couple of coconut trees and chop some fronds off so that they wouldn't fall on the house, but that's not a big price to pay for having a corner of Paradise.

Yeah but what's it got to offer, other than wine country?
