i THINK you tried to make a point that the WTS TRUMPS the law of Russia. And the WTS should have free way to disrespect the legal and civil rights of jw's and other citizens and let the WTS JUST WALK ALL OVER EVERYONE ... IN ESSENCE THATS WHAT YOUR ARTICLE PROPOSING. IF THAT'S WHAT THEY ARE TEACHING AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY. I FEEL SORRY FOR THEM . iF I WAS THE DEAN OF THAT COLLEGE YOU WOULDN'T BE WRITING ANY MORE PAPERS FOR THE NEWPAPERS ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS.

As much as I hate, hate, hate the WTBTS, I cannot condone the banning of them simply because if its okay to ban JW's, where do our freedoms end? Yeah, it would be great if the WT were eliminated but lets hope and pray its eliminated without violating any freedoms.

MrFreeze,
....because if its okay to ban JW's, where do our freedoms end?
This is a classic slippery slope fallacy.
Freedoms are very well defined and protected in the western world. It may not be the case in Russia or elsewhere in the world. An 18 old has the freedom to drink in Russia. Are the freedoms of the same 18 year old violated because he cannot drink in America?
It is the law, and the law in many instances limits freedoms.
Russian law says one should NOT disseminate certain materials. The WT broke the law. The WT got canned....

Yan, I understand that. I was referring to the opinion of people who think that they should be banned here in the US as well.

Path of least resistance for the WT, I guess...It would be really easy to ban them in, say, Saudi Arabia. Oh, wait, they are already banned there
Problem comes when you take your show on the road with the same freedom-laden mindset. The spirit of the article is that same freedoms should be extended on the road and for anything less we have a violation of rights.

Honorsthesis,
Thanks for the link and your efforts to inform people about this important topic. I hope the passionate reaction to your post doesn't hurt your feelings. The problem is that most of us do greatly value freedom of religion and conscience to the point of sacrificing our entire family and social network for the privilege of thinking for ourselves.
I have trouble hiding my satisfaction at seeing the Watchtower Society punished for it's crimes. (I do, however, hate to see the members who are under the influence of mind control persecuted.) I realize that there are legitimate concerns about how the Russian government is handling this. I would rather see the Watchtower Society legalised and taxed while provisions are made to make it easier for former and current members to sue for violations of their rights. I can't think of a better way to convince them to start withdrawing from a country.

If you ban them they just consider the persecution as proof that it is the true religion. It is far better that they are not banned. Consider Greece as an example - when banned or persecuted the JW's were united and bound by a common 'enemy'. But once thet were given freedom of expression and far less persecution activity dropped, yes dropped! Now, just as in other Western nations, two thirds attending meetings are nominal JWs, doing the bare minimum. Give them freedom, ignore it for the unimportant minor religion it is, and growth virtually stops.
There is no need to ban them , just take away their tax break status. Still leave the literature available, but make it expensive to produce and distribute - it works for cigarettes and it will work for the WT, who are only interested in the bottom line. Oh, and make it so the money from donations cannot leave the country. That's my suggestion, target the money, not the religious side. When France insisted on taxes, the WT immediately shut down its bethel there. If the UK had done the same, where else would they have run to?
