Few other legends are so well known, or read so often, and yet remain

so poorly understood. If you read the account in 1st and 2nd

Samuel it,s full of contradiction. At one point David is both A

young boy(that plays the harp) and A skilled warrior. In

1sam.17;55 Saul does not know who David is, and must be

introduced to David after he kills Goliath with head in hand

vs.57,58. Did you know there was two Goliath, yes two giants

killed. Look at 2nd Sam.21;19 Again with the war thing, but

this time it was Elhanan son of Jair who kill the giant with

A spear. This Goliath A little different, he had six fingers

on each hand and six toes on each foot, A descended

from the other giant. What spirtual message can one receive

    from this story.

There is also much doubt that David's Kingdom extended anything like as far as the Bible claims, if so , Israel's reliance on a historical right to the territory they occupy by force is in serious doubt, they have no moral right to claim the land already, so if the historical claim goes, where does that leave them ?

That Bible accounts are often a mash-up of different legends from different sources, and the redactor wasn't particularly careful when he did it.

During all ages, there were court-bootlickers who invented all sorts of extraordinary feats and legends and attributed them to their monarchs. Or the monarchs attributed these feats to themselves! If king David was real, could he not invent this giant-slayer fairytale for his PR? He was a capable singer and poet, as the Bible says...

Notice how often the important characters in the bible are also incredibly beautiful, like David.

Why is that? I think jah prefers hotties.

It's amazing how stories such as this can be passed down through generations and accepted as fact, simply by attaching God's name to them. If enough people believed that Aesop had divine revelation, we would be debating whether or not a turtle really beat a rabbit in a race.

While the story of David and Goliath is refererred to in academic circles as "myth" or "legend," one should not apply the vernacular meaning of these terms to come to the conclusion that scholars are calling this narrative a pure invention or a falsehood.

It is apparant that the tale is loaded with symbolism, for example the way Goliath is described as being as high as 6 cubits, wearing 6 pieces of armor and a carrying a spear that weighed 600 shekels of iron. What isn't clear is how much historicity this legendary tale has behind it, if any.

But there is no universal consensus that it is pure fiction. On the contrary, higher criticism teaches that the Books of Samuel offer a theological interpretation of how the monarchy was established in Isreal, not a historical account. Heroic sagas are interwoven into historical reports by several authors, and the end result is a religous one.

But "thanks," Terry. Now I got that song playing in my head and it won't stop: "They got tiny little hands/and tiny little feet./They drive tiny little cars/ that go beep, beep, beep..."
