Just Tell Us In Plain English

What Jesus "said" is pretty iffy.

We don't know what he said.

We have been taught AS THOUGH we not only DO know, but, understand!

There are only a few instances in the NT where Jesus is DIRECTLY quoted in his native language, Aramaic.

Following those exact quotes we are told the "translation" of those words.

The rest of the time (99%) Jesus is paraphrased. The so called "teachings" of Jesus were transmitted orally from person to person and town to town. PLAIN ENGLISH is as far removed from conversational ARAMAIC as you can get. It would help us immeasurably to admit how ignorant we all are of JESUS' words. Eli Eli lama sabachthani ..............................That is an example of JESUS' EXACT WORDS. How many more actual quotes can you attest to?

well, i don't believe jesus ever existed. and terry is right that there are only rare quotes that could be acutally attributed to jesus, if some prototype of him ever walked this earth. some extra-canonical gospels and writings (and reconstructions, like "Q") might shed a little more light on this.

@tec, of course i listen to men, other animals are a little harder to have a conversation with. all that i said i read in the bible, and i guess that's your original source of information about your savior too. as to bias... it's not like i haven't seen the world like you do before. but one day you have to face reality, and you better hit reality before reality hits you...

    To LifeIsGood...

Rather than say why I believe in 'God', I will say this:

I believe that someone created humans and life and this planet and this universe...
So, if that someone is 'God' then that's who I believe in.

I believe that the Creator is present and I see evidence of that everywhere I look.

What the big plan is or all the ins and outs of it are things I am trying to explore right now.

I feel that the Creator loves humans and regardless of the ups and downs in my life,
I know that there is definitely someone there that knows me, understands me and cares.

Hopefully, that somewhat answers your question.

all that i said i read in the bible,

Okay. Then can you show me where it says this:

he liked the thought of casting out people to hear their gnashing of teeth

Since I don't think you can show me where it says this, or most of the other things you said... then I have to wonder if you, yourself, have faced reality. If you have, then why put a spin on something that isn't there?

The basic conceptual problems with Jesus view of those who get eternal life are-

'You must be born again' and 'I am the way and the truth and the life'.

You see millions of people were and are doing just fine anyways. Its all there in the Gospels even with people either in Paradise already or in line for Paradise without Jesus factoring in to the deal at all.

What progressive 'Christians' are doing is making Jesus Lite, a kinder gentler version they can support and believe in. Darn NT keeps getting in the way.

    @tec, that's easy

    matthew 8:10-12, 13:41-42, 22:12-13, 24:50-51, 25:29-30

    luke 13:23-28

i don't care too much about those things anymore, but when someone comes along and believes christ is all love and sweet cherry pie, i tell them what the bible really tells.

J.Hofer... I'm sorry, but that's exactly what I thought you were going to post. Not a single one of those passages says what you said. None of them say that Jesus liked the thought of casting people into darkness to hear gnashing of their teeth.

They they would be excluded from the kingdom, yes. (the goats, the hypocrites, the haters, the merciless) That they would gnash their teeth from having been excluded, yes. None of that is the same as saying, I like the idea of throwing you all out and watching/listening to your jealousy and anger and weeping.

The fact that he wept over jerusalem shows just the opposite, actually. It shows that He wants them to come to life. All of them. All of us. So I stand by what I said a couple posts up, in response.

if you don't like the idea, you don't mention it that often. and he didn't weep over capernaum and chorazin, so what. you got your raisin-jesus you just pick the raisins out of the story, that's alright with me.

    tec-

Those Jews in Jerusalem were going to get life without Jesus....remember Martha telling Jesus it was so.

The NT has so screwed with the Western mindset it a bigger herculean task to unwind than the Watchtower indoctrination.....

So an assumption on your behalf. An interpretation. You're not actually telling people what the bible really tells (as you said)... you're telling them your interpretation is, of what the bible really tells. Because it doesn't say what you said. That is what you read into what it says. So if you think the rest of us can be wrong (love and sweet cherry pie), then you must also acknowledge the same of yourself.
