I think the fact that they have not even bothered updating the Reasoning book shows they are not interested in making proper arguments any more. A lot of that stuff is badly out of date in terms of facts and figures as well as doctrine, but they don't care because when was the last time anybody had a real debate with someone on the ministry anyway?

The Bible was written for the simpletons to take literally, and for the initiated to learn the mysteries. The problem begins with taking Genesis 1:1 literally, and it's all downhill from there.

Disfellowshipping – A blanket rule that applies to any kind of sin. How can a minor disfellowshipped for smoking a 16 years old who since gave it up get the same treatment of family shunning for life as a murderer or drug dealer. Because it is simple to have a black and white rule that covers every situation.

Actually, the Snakes in the Tower don't seem to care about murder, or even serial killers. After all, we need to have mercy on them. But smoke a joint? Now that's worthy of a one-way ticket to Gehenna.

Indeed. People are not argued/debated into a High-Control Group. They're recruited into them. Love bombing and the B.I.T.E. control model strip people of their ability to make decisions for themselves. Once the invidual believes that God speaks through the group's leader(s), the control is complete.

However JWs in the past did seemingly go in for detailed argumentation as the Make Sure and Reasoning books testify, as well as the stuff Fred Franz wrote on the Trinity and other doctrine. I don't think this change has coincided with JWs becoming more sectarian.

I think these books were more impressive BEFORE the Internet. Now, they're just not impressive, IMHO.

Maybe that's part of the reason why they have given up. No sooner have they written a new defense of a doctrine and it's torn to shreds online.

We had a thread a couple of days ago - "Do JWs still believe in 1914"?

This thread shines some light on that. Yes, technically, they probably say they do somewhere deep in the literature.

But I will confidently say that probably less than 5% of JWs could still give their own flawed, unhistorical, and unscriptural explanation of it - certainly practically NONE of them could without reading it from a JW book.

I will submit that probably at least half of the HLC elders do not understand the current abundently confusing blood doctrine.

It is all boiling down to - go to meetings, go out in service, and absolutely obey what the Governing Body tells you.

The blinders came off my eyes many years before I actually left, when I realized that it didn't matter what I did or how I lived my life.

All that mattered was how well I would stand up under physical torture at Armageddon.

Not a "happifying" realization, believe me.

My brother doesn't even want to comprehend common sense in his dealings with his old faith [The Church] with his JW faith.

Example - He says 'The Catholics changed so many things hundreds of years ago!'

rebuttal - 'Where is the proof in that statement? Look at the Watchtower's short history. The WTS disregards it's own teachings from 75 years ago. Half of it's teachings are disregarded as an embarrassment that JWs ignore'

End of conversation at that point. He just will not move forward from what is told to him by the WTS. It makes no difference to him that he just keeps lying....lying for the 'TRUTH' tm

    respectfully,

    dc

Hey, waitaminute. My hubby is a pretty simple guy and his eyes glazes over at some of the WT teachings. Blood fractions, for instance, and 607 BCE. He says it's too deep for him.
